You might not think it’s a smart idea to board a cruise ship without a passport, but it’s actually one of the latest travel trends – and it continues to grow.

There’s no denying that a trip to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean or even a grand adventure to Europe are phenomenal choices, but companies like American Cruise Lines pride themselves on showcasing overlooked waterways right here in our own backyard.

Their newest destination, which will arrive in 2026, is sure to be a shock!

For the for the first time in decadesTravelers who want to avoid long flights but still enjoy a multi-day excursion on scenic waters can book a cruise on one of America’s most beautiful lakes.

The Midwest and cruises may seem like oil and water to go together at first glance, but once you get into the vast Great LakesAmerican Cruise Lines is sure to make you forget about remote paradises as you cruise charming harbor towns and vibrant blue lakes.

The American Cruise Lines Experience

Ever seen a megaship? One look at it can be overwhelming, especially when you consider all those rude, annoying kids sharing the pool with you.

Think of American Cruise Lines as the anti-megaship.

Offering cozier digs without the flash of casinos, screaming kids on slides, and still providing all-inclusive amenities without the party atmosphere.

So expect spacious rooms (by cruise standards), locally sourced, bespoke food menus and 24/7 hospitality – including free booze, so you can bring the party to you rather than going to a cheap disco.

Better yet, tip is also included!

A trip with ACL feels more like a boutique hotel with attentive service than a giant waterfront resort, and the accolades speak for themselves.

According to their official website“American Cruise Lines is the most awarded U.S. river and small ship cruise line.”

A pre-cruise hotel stay is also included on all itineraries before boarding, so you can rest assured your trip is in good hands from the start.

The Great Lakes Welcomes first cruise in decades

Travelers no longer have to fly across the country to places like San Diego or Miami to set sail for an epic cruise. If you did that, it would be quite a winding route to the Great Lakes.

Instead, travelers can depart from the Midwest, which may sound strange, but according to Charles B. Robertson, president and CEO of American Cruise Lines, “guests have long asked about our style of Great Lakes cruising.”

Adding, “we are now proud to offer these cruises as only Americans can, aboard a new small ship that sails 100% domestically.”

That’s right – no trips to maple country, as all new adventures in the Great Lakes will remain in the US of A.

According to TravelAge West, the “American Patriot” will host up to 130 guests on the following routes.
