The findings, published this week by the personal finance website WalletHubare based on an analysis of 100 of the most populous urban areas across 41 indicators including travel costs, local spending, attractions, weather, activities and safety.

Why Atlanta topped the list

The report attributed Atlanta’s win primarily to accessibility and value. WalletHub analysts specifically noted that the rankings focused on affordability and convenience rather than scenic quality, although Atlanta ranks highly in activities and attractions.

Atlanta’s late-night entertainment scene also received specific mentionwith analysts pointing to the city’s generous last calling hours as a draw for visitors looking for a full summer experience.

The city’s connectivity advantage is well established. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport handled a total of 108 million passengers last year – approximately 20 million more than its nearest competitor – and offers more than 150 domestic and 70 international nonstop routes.

Atlanta’s ranking comes as the city prepares for an exceptionally busy summer. Atlanta will host eight FIFA World Cup 2026 matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with official fan zones, live broadcasts and neighborhood watch parties expected to draw visitors from around the world. The Atlanta History Center will also open a new Civil War-era exhibit this summer, adding to the city’s cultural agenda.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted the broader context driving the rankings: “Choosing a destination that is not only entertaining but also affordable is important when travel, dining and activity costs have risen so much in recent years. It can also give you a longer, more relaxing trip.”

That context is telling. Domestic airfares are currently roughly 19 percent higher than the same period last year, with the average round-trip price rising from $412 to $489 – making Atlanta’s cheap flight access an increasingly meaningful differentiator.

The rest of the rankings

Orlando, Florida, took second place, with WalletHub listing nonstop flights available from around $373 and three-star hotel rooms from $49 per night, in addition to world-famous theme parks, water parks and dining options. Austin, Texas, rounded out the top three for its affordable restaurants, outdoor attractions and relatively low cost of living.

At the bottom of the rankings, WalletHub identified Lansing, Michigan, McAllen, Texas and Ventura, California as the least favorable destinations for summer 2026.
