President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is raising tariffs on Canada by 10% above current levels, increasing trade tensions after accusing the country of broadcasting a program “fraudulent” ad that exploited a 1987 anti-tariff speech by the former president Ronald Reagan. “Canada was caught red-handed when it placed a fraudulent ad in Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” Posting on Truth Social, Trump added that the increase was in response to what he mentioned “serious misrepresentation” and a “hostile act.” The move follows Trump’s decision on Thursday to end trade talks with Canada, straining relations with the United States’ second-largest trading partner.
