While it may not be the first destination that comes to mind when traveling in winter, Indiana offers an appealing mix of quaint towns, outdoor recreation, cultural attractions and scenic beauty.

Here at Traveling Lifestyle we’ve hand-picked the best places to skate, hike, ski or be dazzled by city lights in Indiana. So start packing your boots and mittens. We are sure you will find your next dream destination on this list.

Snowy Red Barn

In winter, a visit to the old Morgan County red barn, accompanied by a silo and basketball hoop, offers a tranquil experience.

The barn stands in a snowy field at sunset and provides a simple but striking image of rural life. This scene reflects the quiet and unassuming beauty of Indiana’s agricultural landscape during the winter months.

Giant glaze at McCormick’s Creek State Park

At Indiana’s McCormick’s Creek State Park, the winter months transform the landscape as giant icicles form on the cliffs, stretching from the overhangs to the canyon floor.

This natural spectacle creates a striking visual contrast in the park and emphasizes the serene beauty of the season in this tranquil natural environment.

Paoli Peaks

Indiana is known for its cold and snowy winters, making it the perfect destination for skiing and snowboarding.

Located on a natural hillside and with 17 slopes to choose from, Paoli Peaks is one of the state’s most popular ski resorts. The terrain is not difficult, so it is also suitable for beginners. Other activities you can enjoy include snow tubing and sledding.

You can take a day trip or stay overnight – there are plenty of accommodations, restaurants and shops in Paoli Peaks. Plus, ski passes are quite affordable, so you won’t break the bank even if you bring your friends or family.

Central Park Plaza, Valparaiso

Skate with your loved ones or play ice hockey. If you plan to stay in the area for a while, you can also take some skating lessons. They are open to all levels and can be purchased as a package of 6 sessions.

It is open every day of the week until March 10. Additionally, skaters can enjoy themed events with music and lights, such as Rock N’ Skate, during select evenings.

Pokagon State Park

For a unique winter adventure, go to Pokagon State Park. It’s about a three-hour drive from Indianapolis, but for good reason, it’s worth the drive. It has a 1,780 meter long and 30 meter high refrigerated toboggan run.

It works with and without snow and is one of the fastest toboggan runs in the entire US. Don’t like fast descents? Don’t worry. In Pokagon State Park you can also hike, cross-country ski, snowshoe or ice fish (a permit is required).
