Two New Divers to Know

Seiko doesn’t rush things. That is rarely necessary. It wasn’t until 2023 that the brand revived the Marinemaster name. Then, in 2024, came a serious return to form with the SLA077 and SLA079, true 300-meter Hi-Beat divers that reminded collectors why the Seiko Prospex Marinemaster mattered in the first place. Now, less than two years later, Seiko is back with something even more compelling. The new Prospex Marinemaster HBF001 and HBF002 come with tangible, meaningful upgrades: a ceramic bezel, extended power reserve, improved accuracy and a tool-less micro-adjustment clasp. As a result, the almost 25% price increase over the previous generation feels justified. This is not a cosmetic refresh; it is a clear evolution.

Although both watches share the same technical basis, they tell very different stories. The HBF001 is the sleek, permanent collection piece: black dial, black bezel, designed for a long lifespan. The HBF002, on the other hand, is JAMSTEC’s limited edition, with a blue gradient dial inspired by the tracks of Arctic icebreakers, and is limited to just 1,000 pieces worldwide. One is a pure tool watch. The other is portable maritime history. However, both require attention ahead of their July 2026 release.

Seiko’s dive watch journey began in 1965. Soon after, the first Japanese dive watch accompanied members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition to the South Pole between 1966 and 1969. Then came the crucial Seiko 1968 Hi-Beat 300m Diver, Japan’s first 300-meter water-resistant watch. That model created a design language that Seiko has since refined.

Importantly, HBF001 and HBF002 do not attempt to replicate the past. Instead, they reinterpret it through modern materials, improved movement technology and improved ergonomics. The characteristic placement of the crown at 4 o’clock is retained. This also applies to the bold, functional silhouette. However, several updates stand out. The ceramic insert, polished black on the HBF001 and blue polished on the HBF002, adds durability and refinement. Meanwhile, the date window has been moved to 3 o’clock, a subtle but welcome improvement over the previous placement of 4:30.

The case measures 42.6mm in diameter and 14.1mm thick, with a stainless steel construction finished with Seiko’s super-hard coating. A double-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while water resistance is up to 300 meters. In short, this is a real diving watch in both form and function.

Two dials, two personalities

Although the cases are identical, what sets these watches apart is the dials. The HBF001 opts for restraint. The fine-grained black dial minimizes light refraction and improves legibility underwater. Thick, high-quality LumiBrite fills each applied index and is embedded directly into the dial to prevent it from loosening under impact. It is striking that the lume has a subtle off-white tint, a quiet nod to the patina of the 1968 original.

The HBF002, on the other hand, is more expressive. The gradient blue dial is inspired by Arctic icebreakers and introduces both texture and story. However, this is not purely aesthetic. The design reflects Seiko’s long-standing partnership with JAMSTEC. That relationship dates back to 1983, when professional Seiko divers were tested at speeds of up to 600 meters aboard the Shinkai 2000. As a result, the HBF002 becomes more than a limited edition; it acts as a visual record of Seiko’s role in real-world sea exploration.

The movement: Seiko’s best caliber in a non-Grand Seiko watch

If there’s one detail that really defines this release, it’s the movement. The caliber 8L45 represents Seiko’s top offering outside of Grand Seiko. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 35 jewels and provides a power reserve of 72 hours.

Compared to the previous 8L35, the upgrades are significant. Accuracy improves from -10/+15 seconds per day to -5/+10 seconds, while overall durability and refinement noticeably increase. Additionally, the timepiece features Seiko’s patented Spron alloy for the mainspring and hairspring, increasing resilience. The crown assembly has also been redesigned and locked into a separate case part, making maintenance easier over time.

Priced at around $3,600, the HBF001 positions itself as one of the strongest contenders in its segment, especially among competitors like the Tudor Black Bay. That comparison alone underlines the value proposition.

Both models are currently available for pre-order via the Seiko boutique website. The HBF001 will be added to the permanent collection for £3,300 (approximately $3,600), while the HBF002, limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, will cost £3,550 (approximately $3,900). Both will arrive at select Seiko Luxe retailers in July 2026. Naturally, the HBF001 will appeal to most collectors. It is versatile, understated and competitively priced. However, the HBF002 may ultimately prove more convincing.

In recent years, the limited editions within the Prospex line have evolved beyond simple aesthetic variations. Instead, they reflect Seiko’s deeper commitment to exploration and technical storytelling. The JAMSTEC connection gives the HBF002 a purpose beyond exclusivity.
