Ryan Gosling Just Made History

No one reported this Ryan Gosling. His track record as a leading man in big-budget films was inconsistent at best. Blade Runner 2049 and The Fall Guy both underperformed on budget. His name alone is rarely something that sells a movie. And yet here we are. “Project Hail Mary” heading for a $71.1 million opening weekend, the best of 2026 to date and the biggest opening in Amazon MGM Studios history, surpassing “Creed III” $58.3 million as of 2023. The film earned $12 million from previews alone. That’s the second-best preview gross ever for a non-sequel, behind only 2017’s It, which grossed $13.5 million. For a $200 million original sci-fi film with no franchise safety net, those are extraordinary numbers.

“Project Hail Mary” is directed by Phil Lord And Christopher Molenaar and adapted by Drew Goddard by Andy Weirs bestselling novel. Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who wakes up alone in a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there, light years from Earth. Critics call it a rare crowd-pleaser with real intelligence, a blockbuster with brains and heart that actually deserves its runtime. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 95%. The public reacts accordingly.

The numbers and what they actually mean

The context behind the numbers matters. If the $71.1 million opening holds, “Project Hail Mary” ties with Jordan Peele’s “Us” as the fourth-best opening ever for a non-franchise title. Only “Oppenheimer” ($82.4 million), “I am a legend” ($77.2 million), and “Avatars” original run ($77 million) is above it. That’s a significant amount of business for a movie based on an IP that most casual moviegoers didn’t know about before the trailer came out.

The global picture is equally strong. The film is targeting a worldwide opening of over $100 million in 82 markets. Forecasters believe the domestic run could total around $200 million. For Amazon MGMa studio that has had costly failures, this is the kind of result that changes conversations internally. The studio has needs “Project Hail Mary” to work to justify the size of the investment it is putting into theatrical releases. At the moment it works.

The composition of the audience is also worth mentioning. The post-trak exits showed that 61% were male and 39% were female. A positive score of 95%. An 85% final recommendation. Fifty-nine percent were between 18 and 34 years old. That is a broad, involved audience. No niche audience. Not just book lovers. The film is widely played.

Why ‘Project Hail Mary’ connected when others didn’t

The promotional campaign was unusually long and deliberate. Amazon MGM showed the film to the press on February 23 – almost a month before its release. They showed footage at CinemaCon in April 2025. The first trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con in July and was viewed more than 400 million times – the largest trailer launch ever for a non-franchise film. This wasn’t a movie that appealed to people. It was methodically built into an event.

Social media is mostly positive. The 520.8 million strong social universe the film follows is 63% ahead of the first film’s sci-fi standards. The comparisons circulating online are telling. The public calls it better than recently “Star Trek.” Stronger then “The Martian” for some. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus describes it as an almost miraculous fusion of cleverness and heart, carried by Gosling at his most winning. That kind of word of mouth isn’t limited to opening weekend.

The visual approach to the film is also distinctive. It was produced digitally and then transferred to film stock before being re-digitized to achieve the warmth of analog film. The alien character Rocky is a completely practical doll creation from Neal Scanlan’s creature shop, brought to life by puppeteer James Ortiz. That choice to build a physical character instead of using standard CGI has resonated deeply with audiences who have grown tired of weightless digital creations.

The rest of the weekend

“Project Hail Mary” dominates, but the rest of the graph also moves. Pixars “Hoppers” holds steady in second place with $21 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $123.3 million. Searchlight “Ready or not 2” opens in third place with an estimated debut of $10 million. The sequel was made for less than $20 million and has a 91% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a profitable weekend no matter where it lands. Hindi action sequel “Dhurandhar: the revenge” posted the biggest opening day ever for a Hindi film in North America, with a $12.7 million weekend expected from 967 locations. Universal “Memories of Him” is in fifth place with $8.7 million in its second weekend.

It’s a really healthy box office weekend. But there’s no doubt who it belongs to. “Project Hail Mary” came at a time when cinema needed exactly these types of films. An original story. A devoted star. A $200 million budget spent on something that isn’t a sequel, a reboot, or a shared universe entry. It’s a Hail Mary pass in more ways than one – and right now it looks like it’s going to connect.
