The aftercare of laser treatment is more important than many people realize because the way you treat your skin after a procedure can affect healing, comfort, and your final results.

Laser treatments can help with texture, scarring, discoloration, redness and signs of aging. But they also intentionally leave your skin temporarily damaged.

That controlled injury is what prompts the skin to renew itself. It also means that your skin barrier will be weaker for a while, leaving your skin vulnerable to irritation, infections, extra redness and pigment problems if you don’t treat it carefully after treatment.

The danger is that you may spend a lot of money on laser treatment and then undo some of the benefits by making mistakes with your post-treatment skin care. Some mistakes do more than just slow healing; they can increase the risk of other problems, such as scarring or infections.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide. Read on to discover what laser treatments actually do to your skin, why aftercare is so important, and the 7 mistakes that can get in the way of your best results.

What laser treatments do to your skin

Laser treatments work by sending targeted beams of light deep into your skin. Depending on the type of laser, this energy can target pigment (color), water in skin cells or specific structures such as blood vessels or collagen fibers.

The goal is to create controlled damage. When the laser disrupts the skin, it activates the body’s natural healing response. Your skin then starts producing new collagen and fresh skin cells to replace the old, damaged cells. Over time, the skin becomes smoother, firmer and more even. Laser results can help erase years of sun damage, smooth deep wrinkles, improve acne scars and stimulate collagen regeneration

But while the skin heals, it is extremely fragile. Think of it as a mild wound that needs to heal. Much of your skin’s barrier is removed, leaving you vulnerable to scarring, pigmentation problems or infections if post-laser care is not taken seriously. This is why the steps you take – and the steps you avoid – in the days and weeks that follow are so crucial.

Your healthcare provider will provide you with aftercare instructions based on the treatment and your skin type. The way you care for your skin after laser treatment will help you get the radiant, rejuvenated results you want, or it could leave you with complications that could have been avoided.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake no. 1: going into the sun too quickly

This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make after laser treatment. Freshly treated skin is extra sensitive to UV light. Sun exposure can worsen redness and inflammation and increase the risk of dark spots or uneven pigmentation after healing. This is even more important if your skin quickly turns brown or discolored. Staying out of direct sunlight and using sun protection is essential after laser and light procedures.

What you can do instead:

Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible while your skin heals. Follow your provider’s instructions on when to start using sunscreen. After your doctor clears you, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and opt for hats, shade, and umbrellas when possible.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake #2: letting the skin become too dry

For the first 24 hours after treatment, keep in mind that your skin has just gone through trauma. It will probably feel tight, warm, red and angry, and you may even experience swelling.

You may think you should let it dry out and crust over, but that can make healing more uncomfortable and worsen the irritation. When the skin loses too much moisture, it becomes tight, irritated and more prone to cracking, all of which can delay healing.

Post-procedural guidance (days 0-3) typically recommends regular maximum occlusion (moisturizing with an occlusive moisturizer) to prevent trans-epidermal water loss and because healing skin needs support while the barrier repairs itself.

What you can do instead:

For the first few days, your healthcare provider may recommend Vaseline or Aquaphor to create an impermeable barrier. We always recommend our Restorative Skin Balm instead, an occlusive ointment that is fragrance and chemical free with no harsh or irritating ingredients. It will create a protective barrier to help heal and protect the skin during the first few days of healing.

It is important to apply regularly to reduce that raw, tight feeling. Applying several times a day can also make a big difference in how quickly and comfortably you heal.

CV Skinlabs Calming Moisture for Face and Neck is an excellent option for general hydration. It is non-irritating, deeply moisturizing and contains ingredients that actively reduce inflammation, which is exactly what the skin needs.

Aftercare after laser treatment Mistake No. 3: Skin care too early

While you’re healing, it’s understandable if you become impatient and go right back to your usual routine. However, this is often a mistake. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, physical exfoliants, vitamin C, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, fragrances, essential oils and strong actives can sting, burn and keep the skin inflamed if the barrier is already fragile.

The American Association of Plastic Surgeons says that products like Retin-A and glycolic acid may need to wait about six weeks after laser resurfacing unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

What you can do instead:

Keep your routine simple. Only use what your provider says is safe. In the early healing phase (days 1-3), a thick, protective occlusive ointment is generally recommended. On day 2 or 3, you can start using a gentle cleanser (never rub) and a safe, non-irritating moisturizer. We recommend our Calming Moisturizer as it contains the ceramides, beta-glucan, glycerin and anti-inflammatory ingredients your skin needs to help with hydration, skin regeneration and barrier repair.

If you want something soothing to control swelling or burning, reach for our Rescue + Relief Spray. It helps tame redness, cool and soothe inflammation. It will also help with the itching and flaking phase.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake No. 4: Picking, scrubbing or peeling the skin

When the skin starts to flake or crust, it is tempting to help. But pricking or peeling the skin can delay healing and increase the risk of irritation, infection and scarring. Blisters and peeling skin are part of how damaged skin protects and repairs itself dermatologists warn against popping or pulling on damaged skin.

What you can do instead:

Allow the skin to peel naturally. Clean it carefully. Pat, don’t rub. Skip scrubbing with washcloths, cleaning brushes, and other abrasives until your provider says you’re ready.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake No. 5: Ignoring your doctor’s instructions

Not every laser treatment requires the same type of recovery. The aftercare for laser hair removal is not the same as the aftercare for deep laser resurfacing. Some patients are told to use specific cleansers, vinegar drops, ointments, or bandages. Others are told when to start using sunscreen or makeup again. The safest guidance is that of the person who treated your skin, because he knows the device, the depth and the settings he used.

What you can do instead:

Follow your doctor’s aftercare sheet. Ignore suggestions from social media. If anything seems unclear, call the office and ask. If you have a product you want to use, such as our CV Skinlabs products, please ask your doctor for approval. We have several dermatologists and skin care specialists who are happy to recommend our products because they know they are safe for damaged skin.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake No. 6: Doing too much, too quickly

After laser treatment, your skin needs time to heal. It’s easy to think that your skin will do just fine on its own, but remember: it’s the largest organ in your body. That means it is strongly influenced by the rest of your body. So if you jump back into heavy workouts, hot showers, saunas, makeup, and full skin care too quickly, your skin could suffer. Heat, sweat, friction and too many products can cause irritation in the initial stages. Healing skin does better when you keep it cool, gentle and simple.

What you can do instead:

Easily back to normal life. Use lukewarm, not hot water. Hold off on exercise and heat exposure for as long as your doctor suggests. If your skin is feeling hot and angry, a soothing mist like our Rescue + Relief Spray can help much more than random products that may contain ingredients that could damage your fragile skin.

Aftercare for laser treatment Mistake No. 7: Ignoring signs of a problem

Some redness, swelling and tenderness may be normal after laser treatment. Worsening pain, pus, spreading heat, fever, or crusting that looks infected are not things to ignore because they can cause problems that can ruin your results.

What you can do instead:

Keep a close eye on your skin. When things improve little by little, it is usually reassuring. If the complaints worsen, contact your dermatologist or practitioner. Waiting and hoping is not a good strategy when an infection or something like that is on the table.

Good aftercare for laser treatment is really about respecting the fact that your skin has been through something traumatic. Laser procedures can provide real improvement, but the recovery period is part of the treatment and not an afterthought.
