Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trumpthe latest in a growing list of institutions and public assets bearing the president’s name.
The airport, located in West Palm Beach, near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, will receive an official name President Donald J. Trump International Airport once final federal approvals are completed. The change is expected to take effect on July 1.
DeSantis signs bill to change airport name
On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis approved the bill renaming the airport, a move widely seen as symbolic of Trump’s strong political and personal ties to Florida.
The decision strengthens Florida’s position as Trump’s political base since moving from New York to Palm Beach in 2019.
According to reports from The GuardianThe legislation is part of a broader trend to name public institutions and initiatives after the president.
A spokesperson familiar with the process noted: “Before the airport name can be changed, a formal request must be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration.” emphasizing that the renaming still requires federal processing and updates to aviation systems.
Federal approval is still required
Although the bill has been signed at the state level, the renaming is not yet final. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must approve the change and update official flight charts, navigation databases and airport identifications.
In a related move, Florida Rep. Brian Mast has introduced legislation to change the airport’s three-letter code PBI to DJTreflecting Trump’s initials.
Signage, digital systems and aviation documentation would all need to be updated before the new name becomes fully operational.
Part of a broader naming trend
The airport’s new name is the latest in a series of initiatives that have attached Trump’s name to public and national assets.
Recent developments include plans for a Trump presidential library in Miamiand his name is associated with government programs, naval ships, and commemorative currency.
The US Treasury announced this earlier this year Trump’s signature will appear on US paper moneya rare move for a sitting president.
In addition, a commemorative gold coin bearing Trump’s image has been approved as part of the celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Trump’s growing presence in Florida

Trump’s ties to Florida have deepened significantly since his move to Mar-a-Lago in 2019.
The Palm Beach area has effectively become the center of his political and personal activitiesmaking the naming of the airport both symbolic and practical.
Plans for the proposed presidential library in Miami further strengthen this presence. Concept designs shared publicly show a large, high-profile complex, underscoring the scale of the project.
Political and public reactions
While supporters see the move as a recognition of Trump’s influence and legacy, critics argue that the rapid expansion of naming public institutions after a sitting president raises political and ethical questions.
The new name also follows previous proposals to attach Trump’s name to major infrastructure projects, including airports and transit hubs in other parts of the United States.
As the July deadline approaches, attention will now shift to federal regulators and whether final approvals are made without delay.
When the change is complete, Palm Beach Airport will become one of the country’s most prominent transportation hubs, bearing the name of a sitting U.S. president.
