Summer is finally here, and if you’re looking for a European beach vacation that’s beautiful, sunny, and incredibly safe, you should check out the latest updates from the U.S. Department of State.
When the U.S. government hands out safety ratings, they are famously strict. The State Department doesn’t take chances with American lives, and it certainly doesn’t hand out top security ratings lightly. So when they officially announce that a destination has been awarded Level 1 status, it’s a big green light for travelers 🚦.
On June 1, 2026, the US Department of State officially canceled the travel advice for the Republic Cyprus reduced to level 1: Practice normal precautions. This beautiful Mediterranean paradise island is officially one of the safest countries in all of Europe.

The spring scare and the summer rebound
If you’ve been keeping a close eye on global travel warnings, you might know that Cyprus has had a bit of a rough spring on paper. Earlier this year the island was placed under a Level 3 travel advisory. It’s incredibly important to understand exactly why that happened, as it had absolutely nothing to do with street crime, dangerous tourist zones or hostility towards visitors.
The warning was entirely related to geopolitical events outside the island. Following hostilities between the United States and Iran in late February, commercial flights in the region experienced significant disruptions. Then, on March 2, 2026, a drone hit a building in the British Sovereign Base Area in Cyprus.

Because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is extremely cautious, they immediately increased the advisory level. This understandably caused a temporary panic among tourists planning their summer vacation. According to the live Traveler Safety Index, traveler sentiment for Cyprus took a serious hit at the time, with the island’s safety score dropping to 76 out of 100.

But as the dust settled and the region quickly stabilized, traveler confidence soared again. The live safety score quickly recovered to one rock solid 87 and continues to rise today. Travelers locally report that the island feels incredibly safe and ready for summer vacationers.
What a Level 1 rating actually means
Obtaining a Level 1 rating from the US Department of State is the absolute holy grail of international travel. It simply means ‘Practice normal precautions’.
You don’t have to hire private security, you don’t have to hide in your resort, and you don’t have to constantly look over your shoulder. You just need to use the exact same common sense that you would use in your own hometown. Cyprus is generally a very safe destination for travelers. The main tourist areas are quiet, the locals are welcoming and the beaches are breathtaking. Whether you’re lounging by the water or exploring ancient ruins, your biggest worry will probably be remembering to reapply your sunscreen ☀️.

The only catch: avoid the Level 2 zone
Although the Republic of Cyprus is Level 1, there is one important geographical catch you should know about before booking your trip. The northern part of the island works very differently.
Since 1974, the southern part of the island has been under the control of the internationally recognized government of the Republic of Cyprus. However, the northern part is governed by Turkish Cypriots and calls itself the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’.

The United States does not recognize this northern region as a country, nor does anyone else in the world except Türkiye. For this reason, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken a hit Level 2 Turkish Cypriot Administered Area: Exercise Increased caution advised due to unrest.
The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia has very limited ability to help U.S. citizens if they run into trouble in the north. Human rights reports also note that the area’s central prisons and police detention facilities simply do not meet international standards.
How to navigate the island safely

Separating the safe southern tourist zones from the north is a strict United Nations buffer zone, guarded by UN peacekeepers. But honestly, if you book a standard beach holiday to the popular tourist resorts in the Republic of Cyprus, you won’t be anywhere near this border. You don’t have to worry about accidentally walking in while looking for a beach bar.
When it comes to booking your flights, keep it simple. You must enter and exit the island via the main southern hubs: Larnaca or Paphos airports.

Every now and then, third-party flight scanners will try to show you a suspiciously cheap, strange flight path that lands at Ercan Airport in the north. Ignore it. The Republic of Cyprus considers entry through the north to be completely illegal. If you try to take a backdoor flight to Ercan and cross south to reach your resort, you could be denied entry or face serious legal trouble.

The bottom line is, it’s simple. Don’t look for weird flight routes to save a few dollars. Stick to the standard southern airports, go straight to the beautiful tourist zones and enjoy your holiday. When the US government grants a country Level 1 status, you can pack your bags with confidence. Cyprus is completely open, safety scores are incredibly high and the waters of the Mediterranean are waiting for you 🌊.
