Having driven back and forth between the two cities multiple times, we’ve experienced various routes and stops along the way. While the most direct route is often via I-5, we’ve found that a combination of Highway 101 and Highway 1 offers a more picturesque and enjoyable journey.

With the upcoming World Cup matches in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, now is a great time to explore the diverse landscapes of California along the way. Whether you’re interested in vineyards, coastal views, or charming towns, there are plenty of attractions to visit on your journey.
Highway 101
Highway 101 offers a more inland route that takes you through vineyards, rolling hills, and some coastal views. Places like Santa Maria Valley and Solvang are worth a visit for their unique charm.
- Mile 0 – San Francisco
- Explore Oakland before heading out, with highlights like Pacific Pipe bouldering gym, Rockridge Neighborhood, and Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. Don’t miss Clio’s Books and food stops at Parche and The Crown.
- Mile 231 – San Luis Obispo / Paso Robles
- Mile 263 – Santa Maria
- Visit Presqu’ile Winery for a memorable dining experience and try Hitching Post for delicious BBQ. Cups & Crumbs is perfect for coffee and baked goods.
- Stay at Wine Stone Inn for a cozy B&B vibe with wine tastings.
- Mile 299 – Solvang

Our Preferred Route
After exploring all four routes multiple times, we recommend a combination of Highway 101 and Highway 1 for a scenic and enjoyable drive. While Big Sur is a popular destination, it can get crowded. Consider visiting Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea for a more relaxed experience before returning to Highway 101.
