While lying on my back on a paddleboard in the center of Lake Bohinj with my eyes closed, I listened to six women breathing.
Originally, I had informed them that it would only take 5 minutes. However, it ended up being closer to 10, as when I finally opened my eyes, none of them had moved. They were all relaxed on their boards, arms trailing in the water, and I suspect a couple of them had even drifted off to sleep. I allowed it to continue until I had to wake them up, as the boards needed to be returned.
That’s the essence of Lake Bohinj. It’s a place where time seems to stand still.

During my 10-day stay in Slovenia in July on a women’s adventure trip, we chose to base ourselves at Lake Bled, like most visitors do. However, Lake Bohinj, located 30 minutes further west, deeper into Triglav National Park, captured my heart and is the one I would recommend you visit first.
The common query that arises before booking a trip is whether to choose Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj. I’ll address that dilemma shortly. (Both are exceptional destinations, making the decision challenging)
Location and Description of Lake Bohinj

Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest permanent lake, situated within Triglav National Park, where the mountains converge with the water on three sides. From the surface, you can admire the panoramic view of peaks and forests surrounding a lake that transforms into a mirror-like surface when the wind subsides.
A picturesque drive of approximately 30 minutes from Lake Bled will take you to Lake Bohinj on a scenic route. Alternatively, there is a bus service that covers the same distance in roughly the same time, with ticket prices ranging from €3 to €14 depending on the route.
For adventure enthusiasts, biking from Lake Bled to Lake Bohinj is also an exciting option. A 28-kilometer continuous cycling path connects the two lakes, offering a delightful journey alongside the Sava Bohinjka River through Slovenia’s natural landscapes. You can opt to rent an ebike, cycle to the destination, and return by bus (or vice versa). Bike transportation is available! Here is a package that includes ebike rental and bus
During our visit in July, the lake was surprisingly uncrowded, unlike many other popular European destinations. If you seek tranquility, adventure, and natural beauty, Lake Bohinj offers a serene escape. It’s a destination that will leave your doctor questioning upon your return, “What have you been doing differently?”
Stand Up Paddleboarding on Lake Bohinj

Paddleboarding is the perfect way to experience Lake Bohinj, a sentiment I share even if I didn’t have a personal affinity for it. It remains my favorite water activity wherever I go, offering a sense of tranquility and connection with nature like no other.
We opted to rent paddleboards from Super Duper, a rental service that stands out for their convenient board delivery. They offer board delivery to three designated points around the lake: St John’s Bridge at the eastern end, the Pit Stop at Naklova glava on the south shore, and Ukanc at the far western end. This unique service allows you to start at one point and finish at another, a feature not commonly found in other rentals around the lake. The minimum rental duration is 2 hours.
Our meeting point was the Pit Stop, a charming wooden shack by the water’s edge with a few outdoor tables. We enjoyed a coffee before embarking on our paddleboarding adventure. While my flat white didn’t quite meet expectations, I recommend ordering an Americano instead.

One important tip to remember: Ensure you use the restroom before arriving at the location, as the portable toilet at the Pit Stop may not be the most pleasant experience.
The Pit Stop also serves as a popular swimming spot. It tends to get busier as the day progresses, so arriving early in the morning is advisable if you prefer a quieter setting for swimming.
We paddled across to a serene bay on the opposite side of the lake, where the water was completely calm. Occasional wooden sightseeing boats and kayakers passed by, but the overall traffic on the water was minimal. We spent our time paddling, conversing on the boards, practicing yoga and headstands, and some even took a refreshing swim in the cooler waters. This experience was one of the highlights of our journey.
After enjoying these activities, we settled in the tranquil bay, where I led a meditation session.

For years, I have practiced an “I am” ritual that I learned from Dr. Wayne Dyer. You select a trait you aspire to embody—be it strength, calmness, or bravery. Inhale, affirm the trait, then exhale while declaring, “I am that.” Following our paddleboarding session, a few of the women mentioned that they held onto their chosen trait throughout our Mount Triglav hike the next day.
Six women on paddleboards in the midst of an alpine lake, silently affirming their aspirations. This is the essence of a Your Limitless Adventures trip.
A local recommendation I’d follow next time: paddle from St John’s Bridge all the way to Ukanc at the far end, then stroll back along the lakeside trail. Take breaks for swimming whenever you feel inclined. Opt for a leisurely day on the lake instead of just a couple of hours.
Savica Waterfall

Situated at the western end of Lake Bohinj, beyond Ukanc, Savica Waterfall is a convenient addition to your Bohinj itinerary. We visited the waterfall after lunch in Bled, although it pairs well with Bohinj due to its proximity.
The journey to the viewing platform involves a mile-long walk and approximately 550 steps through the forest. After enjoying a hearty meal, the climb served as a fitting penance. As we ascended, a double rainbow emerged over the valley, validating our decision.
