After making a name for themselves in New York as CFDA/Fashion Fashion Fund finalists Pia Davis and Autumn Randolph of No Sesso took a two-season break from the infinite loop known as Fashion Week. Spring 2024 marks their return to the catwalk, in their hometown of Los Angeles. “We just wanted to take some time off to really take the brand to the next level and deliver our version of luxury fashion,” Davis said.
The collection, titled Futuro Fish, explored the impact technology will have on humanity in a not-so-distant sci-fi future and imagined what dressing within “The No Sesso System” will be like at that time. It was presented as a performance art piece with an immersive video backdrop and the duo’s artist friends as models.
The pair developed the classic, body-hugging silhouettes they are known for, adding practical practical details such as zippers and patch pockets, and attaching the hems of garments to their cylindrical tote bag. They also explored versatility and convertibility: Jersey dresses and skirts looked like trousers from the back. They played with the concept of garters and chaps, cutting away the fabric above the knee and creating cutouts to reveal the skin at the top of the thigh. Standout looks included an asymmetrical knit polo dress, a cropped leather jacket and matching Bermuda shorts, and a drawstring corset top paired with a strip of jersey miniskirt with an extremely long train.
Expressing their own take on luxury fashion, a knife-pleated miniskirt was the overlay detail on oversized, tailored wool trousers that puddled on the floor. They doubled down on the use of jersey, leather and denim and introduced metallic nylon, cut into a tailored set with bustiers and shorts. Their signature patchwork and appliqué details were visible everywhere, especially on an oversized black leather jacket and the back of a pair of shorts. Found metal pieces were reworked in a jewelry collaboration with artist Georgina Trevino, but Davis noted that there was less upcycling overall as they wanted to create clothing that more people can access.
Community is fundamental to the designers’ vision, so there was a push-pull to stay true to their roots while scaling to an audience outside their circle. Their free time served them well, as the collection felt more polished than in recent seasons. Although it is impossible to predict what will happen next, No Sesso’s future in the fashion world looks bright.
