Now that it’s Grammy week, there’s an air of anticipation in the air. Last week, Black Music Collective’s Recording Academy Honors and 2024 film premieres featured celebrities like Halle Bailey showing off glitzy vibes, but it seemed the stars were saving their energy for Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party and the Grammys themselves. The pre-parties led up to the iconic Grammys on Sunday night, and the standout getups didn’t return. Although this year went soft on over-the-top shine and focused on unique cuts and fabrics, it still delivered a big win.
The appearance
The whole week, Janelle Monae served up outfits like a chef in her prime would: sizzling and tasteful. She was nominated in both the “Best Progressive R&B Album” and “Album of the Year” categories in recognition of her album, The age of pleasure. The excited Grammy nominee took the opportunity to reiterate her IT girl status with elaborate, elaborate looks. In one instance, she wore art as a garment: a handmade Rahul Mishra dress adorned with a dragonfly in the center of a faux petri dish from the designer’s Haute Couture offering. In another party (for the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party), she opted for an all-black bralette and maxi skirt adorned with gold rosette detailing. Undoubtedly, the singer has a way of effortless sophistication.
Sabrina Elba was a delight in Paris, serving couture as a three-course meal. And then she started the month of love in London hand in hand with her elegant husband, Idris. For the One Love movie premiere, she donned a simple dress with a plunging neckline and a fur coat that was heavy. The model further accentuated the look with a layered pearl necklace and natural hair poise.
For the 15 Percent Pledge Benefit Gala, during Grammy weekend, Kelly Rowland wore a draped Benchellal number that highlighted her fashion sensibilities. The brown dress sat proudly on her frame and with the designer’s aim to seamlessly merge sculpture with couture, it was a win. This was a look worthy of being called art and placed in the museum to be admired for centuries to come.
