The Bahamas is the number one destination in the Caribbean and Atlantic for spring break travel in 2024, according to new data from travel insurer Squaremouth.
While recent crime waves and travel advisories have raised safety concerns on the island, tourism leaders insist that The Bahamas continues to welcome visitors with increased security measures.
Bahamas Spring Break Travel Increase in Bookings and Costs
Squaremouth reported this week that the Bahamas is the only Caribbean destination to make the top 10 most popular places for spring break this year. It surpassed heavyweights such as Italy, Spain and France in bookings.
Trips to the Bahamas insured through Squaremouth averaged $5,325 in total, 11.2% more expensive than last spring, but still below this year’s total average vacation cost of $7,719.
Travel advice highlights crime and encourages security
The report follows a January 26 travel advisory from the US Department of State. warning visitors to increased gang activity and violent crime in the Bahamas. While the advisory level remained at level 2 (“Exercise Heightened Caution”), a series of 18 murders in January prompted the updated warning. Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis responded by outlining increased security efforts, including increased police presence, surveillance technology, stricter firearms laws and additional police training.
Experts: Islands are still safe with precautions
Officials and travel experts in the Bahamas say the Bahamas remains safe for visitors. Spring breakers can visit the Bahamas safely by staying vigilant, traveling in groups, avoiding high-crime areas like Nassau and Freeport, and staying only at secure resorts rather than private vacation rentals.
The islands of the Bahamas welcomed more than 8 million visitors in 2023 despite persistent crime problems, attracted by beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and popular resorts.
Global spring break trends: adventure, Asia on the rise
Globally, spring break travelers in 2024 are looking for more adventurous getaways, with 42% citing “adventure” as the purpose of their trip in a Squaremouth survey.
Activities such as hiking, diving and cycling have increased by 23%, especially in destinations such as Australia, Peru, New Zealand and Costa Rica. Searches for travel to Asia are also increasing dramatically, led by Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok.
Domestic trends: affordable alternatives, high flight costs
Domestically, warm-weather locations such as Florida and Puerto Rico rank highly in hotel searches, while more affordable destinations such as Kissimmee, Florida are gaining interest as an alternative to pricier Orlando.
Overall flight costs to many top European destinations remain high this spring, driving budget-minded travelers to routes such as New York, Boston, Tampa, Chicago, Toronto and Latin American hubs.
