Morocco is a destination that is currently having a moment.

After a record year for tourism in 2023, this fascinating cultural destination in North Africa set another tourism record in the first quarter of 2024.

Tourist in Morocco

A few months ago I traveled to Morocco for the first time, and… I was shocked to discover that it is a surprisingly good destination for solo travelers – even solo female travelers.

Morocco may not be the first place you think of when you think of solo travel destinations, but I met many other solo travelers during my time there. (Which makes sense when you look at the overall increase in tourism in Morocco and how solo travel is also popular.)

Here’s why Morocco is a shockingly good destination for your next solo trip:

It feels very safe

I’m not going to lie; When I first arrived in Morocco, I felt a little apprehensive.

I just came from Egypt, a destination I loved but would NOT recommend for solo female travelers.

I expected Morocco to be more of the same.

Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to experience very little vilification or harassment, as I had become accustomed to in Egypt.

The safest destinations for me were Marrakech, Rabat and Chefchaoeun.

Now there are some places in Morocco you don’t want to go alone, even in cities. It’s important to do a lot of research beforehand and be extra careful if you’re traveling here alone.

But overall I felt very safe during my time as a solo traveler in Morocco.

It is extremely affordable

Another reason Morocco is ideal for solo travelers is because of its affordable price.

You can stay in a nice riad (a traditional type of Moroccan accommodation similar to a bed and breakfast) for $40 a night or even less for a simpler hotel or hostel.

I’ve had plenty of great meals in Morocco for under $10, so food is another part of your budget that doesn’t require you to break the bank.

Transport is also quite cheap: there is a high-speed train that goes from Casablanca to Marrakech in three hours and costs only about $15, for example.

Becoming a digital nomad hub

If you are a solo traveler who works remotely as a digital nomad around the world, Morocco is also a great destination for 2024.

It is quickly becoming the most important digital nomad hub in Africa.

Marrakech in particular is an excellent place to establish yourself as a digital nomad. This vibrant city has all the amenities a digital nomad could want while giving you easy access to one of the most fascinating cultural destinations in the world.

You can also travel to Europe from Marrakech in just a few hours (Spain and Portugal are both less than a two-hour flight away), so it’s a very convenient base.

Many tour options

Finally, if you are a solo traveler but don’t actually want to travel in Morocco on your ownthe country has many great options for group travel.

This is basically what I did at the beginning of my Morocco trip to test the waters.

Companies like G Adventures and Intrepid Travel offer tours in Morocco, where you can travel around with a group of like-minded travelers and explore the country for a week or two.

This takes away the logistical hassle (and makes it easier to visit destinations that are harder to reach on their own) and still gives you plenty of free time to explore on your own.

Of course, that’s not a necessity: you can easily visit Morocco as a solo traveler and book everything yourself, including transport (which is quite easy because Morocco has a good train system that connects the main tourist hotspots).
