The Cannes Film Festival is not just for actors, as Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen make very clear. Models, journalists and other members of the film industry will all mingle at the festival, which runs until May 25.
But why exactly are there models in Cannes? The fashion industry has become an increasingly large presence at the French festival, with Chanel and Saint Laurent dipping their toes into the production game. Saint Laurent Productions, founded last year and led by creative director Anthony Vaccarello, will premiere three films at the 77th Cannes Film Festival: Emilia Perez, starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña; by David Cronenberg The shrouds; And Parthenope.
Models have long visited Cannes for the amfAR Gala, which was founded by Elizabeth Taylor to raise money for AIDS research. One of the highlights of the gala is the fashion show, which in recent years has featured Sara Sampaio, Irina Shayk, Jourdan Dunn, Ashley Graham and Daphne Groeneveld.
The French Riviera is already packed with a rotating cast of models, hitting the red carpet at premieres and parties. Whether it’s Naomi Campbell gracing the Croisette in a dress she wore on the Chanel catwalk in 1996, or Bella Hadid being bullied around town, Cannes has turned into a bona fide fashion festival.
