The Rise of Tantouring: A New Contouring Technique Taking Over the Beauty World
Gone are the days of spending hours on a makeup routine. Beauty enthusiasts are now opting for smarter and more efficient techniques. Lip stains, brow tints, lash lifts, and now, “tantouring,” are changing the game in the beauty industry. Tantouring involves using self-tanner strategically to enhance facial features, replacing traditional contouring methods.
Recently, a TikTok creator known as @lulaindee sparked a conversation about tantouring after sharing a video experimenting with the technique. While the concept is not new, the key lies in the correct application to achieve a natural and seamless look.
Understanding Tantouring
Tantouring is a simple concept where self-tanner is applied to the same areas you would typically contour with makeup. Celebrity tan artist and Dolce Glow founder Isabel Alysa recommends focusing on areas like the cheekbones, forehead, jawline, and sides of the nose to enhance natural features subtly.

Unlike traditional cream contour, self-tanner sets in place and requires careful blending for a natural finish. Alysa emphasizes the importance of blending to avoid harsh lines and ensure a seamless transition between tanned and natural skin.
Mastering the Art of Tantouring
For a successful tantouring session, start with clean, dry skin, free from any serums or moisturizers. Exfoliating beforehand helps the self-tanner develop evenly, especially on dry or textured areas.

After applying self-tanner to contour points, use a damp beauty sponge or brush to blend the product gently. The key is to soften the edges without disrupting the placement, ensuring a natural and diffused look.
Using the right amount of product is crucial in tantouring. Alysa advises starting with a small amount and building up if needed. Removing excess self-tanner can be challenging once it develops fully, so a less-is-more approach is recommended.

If you accidentally apply too much self-tanner, gentle exfoliation can help tone down the intensity. Focus on the areas you want to lighten using a warm washcloth and mild exfoliating cleanser.
Once you achieve the desired contour depth and placement, allow the self-tanner to develop fully before hydrating your skin and avoiding exfoliants. This semi-permanent contour will last for several days, giving you a bronzed and defined look without the need for daily makeup.
