It’s all smiles in a highly underrated California city, beaming with history, just minutes from some of the West Coast’s best beaches.
Anchored by a mission that would awe even Tom Cruise and serve as a springboard not only to the incredible coastline but also to the vast wine country, this is truly one of California’s most unique destinations.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a history buff, avid beachgoer or wine connoisseur, everyone seems to arrive with few expectations and leave with a new favorite getaway in place of the former pass-through reputation.

While most are still picking the household names for a summer getaway – you know, San Diego, San Fran and LA – the Central Coast is perhaps the trendiest spot on the West Coast right now, with Santa Barbara, now lesser known. San Luis Obispo (SLO) welcome more visitors than ever before.
Paradise beaches within easy reach

Speaking of trendy, you may have heard that the island of St. Lucia is one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean right now.
You might suspect that SLO is leading sun seekers to one of California’s best-kept secrets, which we call ‘St. Lucia’ of the West.
While no place in the United States can really compare to the towering Pitons of St. Lucia, Morro Bay comes surprisingly close in spirit, anchored by a massive volcanic monolith rising from the Pacific Ocean, like something flown in from another coastline (or planet) entirely.
And that’s just the surface.

More notable places like Pismo Beach are also having a moment, while Avila Beach is widely considered California’s best beach, even though it seems few can point it out on a map.
But remember what I said about the Central Coast?
It’s teeming with beautiful beach towns like Cambria, Cayucos and more that have yet to become mainstream.
Whether you take a road trip or fly into San Luis Obispo’s small airport, you’ll be led to some of California’s most rewarding beaches with fewer footprints and expansive views, and far more tranquility than a typical SoCal getaway that everyone flocks to.
Underrated wine country

Look, Napa may get all the shine, but the entire state of California is home to countless vineyards with hidden gems, whether they’re chic country villas in Temecula, or the windy country roads of Lompoc’s Sta. Rita Hills.
Somewhere in between is SLO, where they are said to be over 40,000 hectares of blissful vineyards where your favorite adult grape juice is grown – minus the Napa crowds, Napa prices and Napa-level pretensions.
Here the tasting rooms feel more relaxed, the landscape changes from rolling vineyards to a rugged coast in a matter of minutes, and it all feels local without anyone trying too hard to impress you.
Needless to say, wine travel are a must.

There is actually a sustainable one wine route also, so you feel good about participating in tastings (and don’t spit it out).
According to TripAdvisor, Chamisal Vineyards is San Luis Obispo’s Best Winery for 2026.
Today’s mission: Go to the mission!
If there’s one attraction you can’t miss in SLO, it’s the legendary one Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa located right in the heart of the city center.
The timeline is fascinating as the fifth of the state’s 21 missions, founded in 1772 by Father Junípero Serra.
Today it anchors downtown SLO with classic mission architecture, a postcard plaza, and the kind of walkable historic setting that makes you wonder why this city isn’t talked about more.

Better yet, it won’t cost you a cent to visit. The mission official place says it doesn’t charge admission and instead relies on donations.
In addition, free public tours are offered daily and no advance reservations are required.
How safe is SLO?
San Luis Obispo may be having a record year, with nearly 8 million visitors in 2025, but it hasn’t yet reached the level of prominence to earn it a spot on Travel Off Path’s Traveler Safety Index.
That’s why we dug a little further.
You may know that more popular places, like San Francisco and Los Angeles, have been a PR agent’s worst nightmare, constantly being on the wrong side of the news.

However, one reason the Central Coast is on the rise across the board is how safe it feels, including a virtually unknown city that claims to be the “safest city in the world.”
According to our sourcesVisitors to SLO have a 1 in 225 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime.
The nice thing about planning a trip here is that the city offers a common overview, showing specific areas of reported crimes, so you can determine where to book your stay.
