The Minister of Transport for Indonesia, Budi Karya Sumadi, has revealed in detail plan for Bali’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.

The Bali LRT, which has been proposed for several years, is desperately needed to alleviate traffic congestion in Bali, according to Budi Karya.

“Bali is an international showcase for tourism, and there is indeed chronic traffic congestion that could have a counterproductive effect if left unaddressed,” Budi Karya said this in a statement on Sunday.

With a 51 percent stake in the project, the Balinese provincial government is leading the way, while the central government contributes the remaining 49 percent.

Phase 1 of the Bali LRT, which will cover a length of 5.3 kilometers and connect I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport to Seminyak via Central Parkir Kuta, is currently being prioritized by the Bali provincial government.

It is expected that Phase 1 of construction will start in 2024 and will last three years. After phase 1, the line will be extended from Seminyak to Mengwitani in phase 2.

Bali is pursuing a comprehensive public transport system as a long-term goal, incorporating the LRT project. This initiative aims to reduce Bali’s dependence on private cars and motorcycles, by tackling the island’s problems of traffic congestion, air pollution and accidents.
