Back in the day, those with South Carolina on their brains were probably exploring in one of two places.
You know the ones: Charleston and Myrtle Beach, no surprise.
While SC’s most famous getaways continue to draw crowds, another unsuspecting city is in such a spotlight that it’s been dubbed America’s “fastest growing airport.”

While Charleston is as enticing as ever, whether you’re looking for a sunny beach getaway, cultural immersion, or hoping to snap a selfie with Bill Murray, it’s South Carolina’s capital that has become all the rage in the past year.
The city is much more than just a student town and an underrated capital Colombia is brimming with timeless charm, surrounded by amazing nature, and has embraced competing against Charleston as its interstate rival for the best Southern cuisine.
This lesser known outing had a record year in 2025 with no plans to slow down, so let’s dive in to see what the new hype is about!
Swap coastal bliss for riverside delights

If there’s one knock on Columbia, it’s that it’s located inland at the confluence of three rivers rather than along the vast blue Atlantic Ocean.
But going inland can be just as fun as a beach holiday, especially since you don’t have to come home with sand crevices this way.
Along the riverfront you will find numerous hiking trails, scenic hiking trails and lush parks. If you’re the more adventurous type, this city caters for you too, with kayak, canoe and tube rentals available for exploring.
Of course, as beautiful as Columbia’s nature is, it practically invites you to spend as much time outside as possible.

What better way to grab a bite to eat or drink an ice-cold beer after exploring this safe city, especially in the summer?
Brewery Bierkeller ticks the boxes for food, beer and breathtaking views from the expansive terrace overlooking the flowing waterfront.
But here’s a spoiler you didn’t expect. Not only is the riverfront a great place to hang out and get your bearings, but venturing beyond the city limits takes your trip to the next level.
Lake Murray is a destination in itself
Just west of Columbia is Lake Murray, a vast ancient man-made reservoir that, unlike some parts of LA, actually contains water.

To beat South Carolina’s summer heat, go for a swim or relax at the beach (yes, there are scenic beaches) to cool off and unwind.
The approximately 50,000-acre lake is a major summer draw for boaters, fishermen and sun worshipers, whether kayaking, cruising, fishing or swimming in designated areas.
Just as memorable is an aspect you probably didn’t expect: it Purple Martin phenomenon in late summer.
This is the time when an estimated 800,000 to more than 1 million birds gather on Bomb Island each summer for a twilight spectacle unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

It is even said that these groups are so large that they have disrupted weather radars.
But even if birdwatching has become the new thing Pokémon GoThere are endless ways to enjoy Lake Murray without looking at the sky.
At ground level there are designated swimming areas, boat ramps, scenic shoreline parks and plenty of places to cast a line or launch a kayak.
And yes: you can stay along Lake Murray if you like cozy cabins. Otherwise, your best bet in Columbia is to stay at a name-brand hotel and take a day trip.
Southern Staples served with a side of history

Down-home cooking and deep-rooted history go hand in hand when it comes to just about anywhere in the South.
Places like Savannah and Charleston are great examples of this.
That said, don’t sleep on Columbia.
This city is bursting with history through striking museums, such as the South Carolina State Museum and the Hampton-Preston Houseand also serves sensational southern entrees without the lines out the door like you might find therein other SC city.
Columbia does indeed have some new trendy restaurants, but what makes this city extraordinary are its long-standing Mom ‘n Pop eateries with dishes passed down the family tree – Villa Tronco be one of many.
More flights and airport upgrades

South Carolina’s household names are within easy reach, but new flights and extensive upgrades have made Columbia the fastest-growing airport in the country.
This unsung capital is no longer a trek to reach. With popular airlines like United and American as anchor points, plus Allegiant offering plentiful options for bargain hunters, Columbia has become an easier and more attractive entry point than ever.
Hundreds of new parking spaces have already been added and road access improved to reduce past traffic congestion.
But next time you come here, you might want to arrive early. Columbia Regional Airport (CAE) still has its hard hat on with continued expansion for new dining options, but unfortunately no lounge.
