It seems like more and more people are planning to head to Cancun, Tulum, or Los Cabos this summer, and if you want to see what all the fuss is about, great!
All three places promise the summer experience of a lifetime; After all, there’s a reason why people can’t seem to get enough of it.
But if you’re looking for something more intimate and authentic, it can be difficult to find a destination in Mexico that suits you.
That is, until now!
With pristine beaches, quaint streets that wind past colorful buildings, and breathtaking views, this city on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula is everything you could want and more, and best of all, it’s just an hour from Los Cabos, so even if you decide you want to change things up a bit, the infectious energy of a major tourist center is just a short drive away.
I have to say, though: I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll actually find out more about it one day Todos Santosyou don’t want to make other plans.
This is why:
Small but mighty: Todos Santos has it all!
You’d be surprised how much history, culture and natural allure you can fit into 37.5 square kilometers of land, but Todos Santos is here to exceed all expectations.
In terms of sightseeing, the city is unbeatable (yes, even when compared to some much better-known hotspots).
Not only are Playa La Cachora and Playa Los Cerritos perfect for surfing, sunbathing and relaxing, but the stark contrast between the deep golden sand and striking blue water is a sight to behold in itself.
Playa La Cachora is not in Todos Santos itself, but is a short drive away.
If you’re more of a hiker, the trails that run through the nearby Sierra de la Laguna mountains promise the most breathtaking views ever, while culture seekers will fall in love with the mission of Nuestra Señora del Pilar and Galeria Logan.
Worried about getting bored? Do not.
So there’s a fine line between a quiet summer vacation and a boring one, and the good news is that you don’t have to cross it in Todos Santos.
Sure, you’ll come to a small beach town during the off-season, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend your days cooped up in a hotel room.
Even if you’re not a big fan of surfing (which is a big part of the local culture, by the way), you can always fill your itinerary with beginner classes, fun hikes, horseback rides, expeditions to galleries, visits to local markets, yoga sessions, and musical numbers on the town square.
A safe haven
When it comes to hidden gems like this, what they normally lack in upbeat energy is more than made up for in safety and tranquility, and Todos Santos doesn’t disappoint on that front either.
Thanks to the friendly local community and incredibly low crime rates, you can be sure that your summer here will be peaceful (and I say that in the best way possible!).
However, keep in mind that petty crime occurs everywhere, especially in the more touristy areas. So it’s always a good idea to take the same safety precautions you normally take: stay aware of your surroundings and avoid deserted, dimly lit areas at night.
Take advantage of the off-season prices, but make sure you practice your Spanish too
Another major advantage that Todos Santos currently has over its better-known neighbors is that its small-town status, combined with the fact that summer is actually the low season in the region, means that you don’t have to deal with insane Prices.
However, there is still a reason why most travelers choose to come here during the winter months.
For starters, the weather right now can be too hot and humid and, honestly, a bit unpredictable, so you have to be open to sudden changes in plan.
Secondly, because this is not your average tourist center, few locals speak fluent English, and those that do usually only come to the area during the winter months, so be sure to check out that high school Spanish skills just in case.
