The wild center

Located in Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks, the Wild center is a perfect place for families and outdoor enthusiasts to get close to nature. The most popular attraction is an elevated path called the Wild Walk. Via various platforms, swing bridges and a spider web you reach the top of the tree, from where you can enjoy fascinating views.

Since the center’s main role is education, it offers numerous educational programs, workshops, tours and interactive exhibitions – curious children will love it. There is also a cafe where you can hang out and refuel.

Bannerman Castle – Pollepel Island

You don’t have to go all the way to Europe to see enchanting castles. Not many people know about it, but there is one within commuting distance of New York City and it is ideal for a great day out.

It is located on Pollepel Island in the middle of the Hudson River and is connected to the Big Apple via Metro-North’s Hudson Line and a short boat shuttle.

The boat ride is already a great experience as you get the chance to have beautiful views of both sides of the river. You can then wander among the ruins on your own or take a guided tour; they are known to be very good. The terrain at the castle is quite rocky, so make sure you wear sturdy shoes.

Pier 57 Roof Park

When you’re in New York, hanging out on one of the rooftops is simply a must. Not only are they more budget-friendly than climbing the skyscrapers, but they are often less crowded and much more fun.

One of those roofs is Pier 57 – a public space that offers a mix of greenery, cultural attractions and beautiful views of the skyline and the Little Island.

On the ground floor, you can grab a bite to eat from the food market (gluten-free and vegan options available) and enjoy it with unparalleled views. Plus, it’s dog-friendly and admission is free – definitely a plus in NYC.

New York State is also home to some fantastic national forests and state parks. Sam’s Point Preserve is the southernmost portion of Minnewaska State Park. It covers approximately 5,000 hectares and contains numerous viewpoints and natural wonders, the most prominent of which are the ice caves.

These unique natural formations fill with ice and snow each winter, lasting well into the summer months. That’s why the Ellenville Fault Ice Caves are an ideal place to cool off and enjoy a little hiking even when it’s hot.

You can explore the works of art via well-maintained paths and paths. Once your legs get tired, you can rent a bike, which will allow you to cover more ground. Afterwards you can relax and enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack in the campsite café.
