Mexico is more than just a perfect beach destination.

Immersing yourself in the culture of our southern neighbors, you will immediately wonder why this country has a dubious reputation.

I can confirm that the locals from Tijuana to Chetumal are warm, friendly and hospitable, outside of a select number of no-go zones that tourists should avoid.

Cozumel's Chen Rio Beach

Some travelers who visit America say that we don’t really have a culture of just being glued to our phones and ordering food on the go, rather than visiting ancient sites and busy markets.

It’s not a bad argument, but Mexico is undeniably the antithesis, packed with wonderful cultural attractions wherever you go.

In fact, the country is home to 177 designated pueblo magicwhich translates to ‘magical cities’.

The Mexican government does encourage tourists to take a deep dive into the endless magic of their country.

These are the top 5 magical cities for summer vacations:

Tulum

If you didn’t know that Tulum now has its own international airport, you’re probably one of the Americans who likes to scroll aimlessly on their phone.

Tulum has risen to new heights thanks to the new airport offering much easier access by skipping Cancun and of course the long-awaited Mayan Train – although there have been some hiccups.

Would you like to be one of the first to fly directly to Tulum? View your options Google Flights here.

In addition to this popular beach destination’s new direct flights and exciting train rides, you’ll find a wealth of fascinating history.

Tulum was honored with pueblo magic status in 2015, largely due to ancient ruins that overlook the Caribbean as something not to be missed El Castillo.

Mixed with a vibrant art scene, don’t skimp on Tulum’s incredible history as one of the best places to visit Mayan structures in Mexico, as they are known for being extremely well preserved.

Summer is perfect for a visit as you can explore fascinating locations and the beautiful waters of both the Caribbean and the surrounding area cenotes all in one trip.

Cozumel

Do islands ever get old? Nada.

They’re even better when they’re packed with intriguing history and culture. While Mayan ruins aren’t typically at the top of the list for a paradise island vacation, Cozumel is a different story.

This beautiful island in the Caribbean Sea is more than just a popular cruise port and lavish resort hotspot.

As one of the newest destinations to gain magical Pueblo status, the question should be, “What took so long?”.

With impeccable locations such as San Gervasio, El Cedral and El Caracol, you will immediately discover why Cozumel is so much more than pristine blue water.

Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo is the second half of the highly underrated all-inclusive resort destination Ixtapa, which has done enough to catch my eye as my next Mexican vacation.

The latter, commonly bundled together as Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, is a phenomenal place to not only experience scenic beaches, but also get a glimpse into the region’s past.

Just like Cozumel, Zihuatanejo is yet another addition to the exclusive pueblo magic club, recognized in 2023.

Known for its stunning beauty and vibrant culture, influenced by indigenous groups, which continue to be showcased today through art, cuisine and festivals, this beautiful holiday spot is more than meets the eye.

For traditional dishes, a visit to Restaurante Carmelitas or Restaurante Doña Celia is definitely worthwhile. Aporreadillo, anyone?

Loreto

While Los Cabos steals the spotlight from Baja, there’s one beautiful coastal town that’s perfect for a summer vacation.

Loreto is wonderful, beautiful and in some ways timeless. While visiting the beach is the most tempting aspect of all Mexico’s coasts, a stroll through Loreto’s fascinating city center is a must.

Lined with charming cobbled streets and 17th-century missions, you’ll be transported to another era as you take in the breathtaking scenery surrounding this lesser-known gem.

Lying along the Sea of Cortez, you’ll see why pueblo magic The status is not only due to history, but is also intended to highlight Mexico’s natural beauty.

Famous explorer Jacques Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez ‘The Aquarium of the World’.

Veracruz

Veracruz, both a city and a state, is one of Mexico’s most underrated beach destinations. Better yet, the state as a whole is teeming with historical goodies.
