While most Americans spend money on vacations to our southern compatriots, our northern neighbors tempt us to visit on the cheap!
Some Canadian budget airlines have met their maple…I mean maker…lately, but less well known Flair Airlines is one of the last true low-cost airlines still standing.
And with $1 flightshow could they be defeated?
If you thought US budget airlines were on the struggle bus, think again.
Lynx and Canada Jetlines could no longer pay the bills and Swoop was bought by the much more popular WestJet, leaving only Flair and Air Canada’s Rouge.
As for Edmonton-based Flair, they fly to some really cool places in Canada, Mexico and the US, where two lucky American cities can score incredibly cheap deals to Canada’s most beautiful fall destinations.
$1 direct flights from Las Vegas (LAS)
You can’t buy much more for a dollar, but you can buy a flight to Canada this fall.
And before you ask: ‘What’s the catch?’: there aren’t any, except that death and taxes are inescapable even in the north.
Complete transparency: All $1 flights are non-refundable and cost between $16 and $39, including fees and taxes, but excluding any extras such as seat selection and baggage.
Although, as with the American budget airlines, the lowest class allows a free flight ‘personal bag‘not larger than 6 x 13 x 17 (inches) and weighing not more than 15.5 lbs.
Flair is offering cheap flights from Las Vegas to 2 great Canadian cities, just in time to see a colorful shift in the treetops.
Stands first Calgary (YYC)with the $1 base fares valid on September 13 and 20.
Explore this vastly underrated city, overshadowed by Vancouver and Toronto, and a gateway to one of North America’s most beautiful mountain destinations, Banff.
Some might say that Calgary is the ‘Denver of Canada’, a fun, thriving city nestled in the majestic Rockies.
Banff is just an hour and a half drive away for a more scenic, compelling mountain town and an excellent choice for fall foliage photos.
Secondly Edmonton (YEG)another overlooked Canadian city unless you’re an avid hockey fan. Book $1 flights for September 17 and 19 for an outdoor enthusiast’s haven popular for hiking, biking and kayaking.
And one attraction that might surprise you is the West Edmonton Mallthe largest mall in North America, which damages the Mall of America’s ego.
$1 direct flights from Orlando (MCO)
Orlando is the only one in Las Vegas, with $1 flights to 3 underrated Canadian cities. And I’ll be honest: you may not have heard of any of them.
But let’s start with the one that stands out the most as an alternative airport for Toronto, a city that you have Certainly heard of it!
Flights to Kitchener-Waterloo (YKF), about an hour’s drive from downtown Toronto, are worth taking some extra driving time.
Basic rates of $1 are available on November 2 and 5, when fall colors should be in full bloom in Canada’s largest cosmopolitan city.
What’s perhaps most impressive, and should be noted right away, is the fact that Flair is offering $1 fares the week of Christmas, which almost never happens with any airline.
Airfares normally skyrocket during major holidays, so if you fancy a winter trip to Canada’s lesser-known areas, take advantage of flights from Orlando to:
- London (YXU) – December 20 and 23
- St. John’s (YSJ) – December 22
More about flair
Not that there are any immediate concerns about bankruptcy, but travelers may want to know that Flair has done so had financial difficulties.
Let’s just say that travel insurance is always a wise idea, even for the most profitable airlines, especially when traveling internationally.
Flair Airlines is a true budget airline through and through, offering dirt-cheap airfares and nickel and diming everything else.
Make sure you know your baggage allowance before you check in, as the gate fee is doubled and almost tripled at the gate.
Low cost airlines are usually basic and no frills, so expect to pay for drinks and seats, but random assignment is free.
Remember, you paid $1, but safety is not an issue Airline ratings recognized Flair as a top budget airline.
