Autumn is undoubtedly the ultimate season for a European city trip, but is an extra transatlantic getaway in the shoulder season financially feasible?

The short answer is yes, but there is a caveat.

You’ll need to be extra careful when it comes to choosing your destination – Paris, London and Zurich are all beautiful, but they’ll definitely put a strain on your travel budget, which is why you’ll want to opt for something quieter instead.

The good news is that if you’re lacking inspiration, you might find some here.

Air DNA just released a report on Europe’s fastest-growing travel hubs, and surprise, surprise: every country that made the top 5 is a budget-friendly getaway.

So without further ado, let’s dive into some of Europe’s best value destinations and why you’ll want to add at least one to your bucket list:

5. Lithuania

Lithuania has long been one of Europe’s most underrated gems, and as someone who was lucky enough to experience Vilnius, its beautiful capital, a few years ago, I’m happy to see the country finally getting the recognition it deserves. it deserves.

With its medieval history, picturesque landscapes and surprisingly active nightlife, Lithuania is likely to exceed all your expectations, given the diversity and versatility of the destination.

Of course, you’ll want to start your trip here in Vilnius, where you’ll explore the famous Old Town (one of the largest surviving medieval settlements in Europe), complete with Gediminas Tower, Vilnius Cathedral, and the Republic of Užupis. .

Beautiful hotels in the area hover around $65 per night this are one of my personal favorites.

4. Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Balkans are by far the most overlooked region of Europe, and no one can convince me otherwise.

Just look at Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country so steeped in history and culture that it rivals even much more expensive (and famous) places like the Czech Republic or even Austria.

Sarajevo is a must see.

Here you can experience the most incredible mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav influences just by walking through the quaint streets of Baščaršija, and of course you’ll want to make your way to the iconic Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, what a series of events that led to the First World War.

History buffs will also fall in love with Mostar, whose 16th-century Ottoman bridge and charming guest houses makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a completely different era.

But before you go, don’t forget to try a cup of traditional Bosnian coffee for around $1 in the old town – it doesn’t get much better than that.

3. Albania

Although Albania has seen a rapid rise in popularity in recent years, it seems the growth is far from over.

More and more people are discovering how beautiful, reasonably priced and surprisingly diverse this once overlooked country is.

Between the vibrant cityscape of Tirana, the breathtaking beaches of Saranda, the UNESCO-listed ruins of Butrint and the winter city atmosphere of Korça, you’re guaranteed a great time here all year round.

And as someone who has traveled through most of the country alone, I’m the first to tell you that despite what you may have heard online, this is one of the safest countries you’ll ever visit, so definitely consider it for your next European getaway.

2. Moldova

We leave the Balkans for a minute (at least according to the most commonly accepted definitions of the region) to head to Moldova, a small country nestled between Romania and Ukraine, known for its breathtaking countryside views and even better food.

However, that doesn’t mean you won’t experience a typical European city here.

Although Chişinău isn’t as flashy as most other capitals on the continent, it’s still a beautiful city that not only has plenty to see and do, but also promises some of the best prices you’ll ever come across – think hotels that charge $35 per night and restaurant meals that cost less than $10 per person.

1. Kosovo

We’ll end things with a bang, as Kosovo, Europe’s youngest country (which declared independence in 2008) is also officially the fastest growing destination, and as someone who’s had the chance to experience some of the hottest hotspots explore, it’s also easy to see why.

For city trippers, I would recommend none other than Pristina, the beautiful yet affordable capital where meals rarely cost more than $8 per person, and the vibrant café culture will help you get closer to the hospitable locals.

Nature lovers, on the other hand, will fall in love with the Rugova Canyon, where you can hike, climb and even zipline.
