What is the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean? The answer is Nassau in the Bahamas. This year the port broke another record.
A record number of passengers
In 2024, Nassau’s cruise port had 5.6 million cruise visitors. In 2023 they reached 4.4 million. Both totals were record highs, so Nassau continues to grow. The port has clearly recovered from the pandemic.
It has also benefited from a new walkable layout following a major redevelopment completed last year. Upgrades continue and new restaurants and transportation facilities are planned. The new cruise terminal includes a variety of vendors, including not only food and tour operators, but also local crafts.
Growth despite problems
This record growth occurs despite multiple travel advisories warning against travel to the Bahamas. For the US, the Bahamas has been at Level 2 (“Exercise Heightened Caution”) since January 2023. The Bahamas has experienced increased violent crime and gang activity, but travel experts say these beautiful islands are still safe. as long as you remain vigilant and travel with others if possible.
While Nassau itself has done that high crime levelsthe cruise port is under increased security and you can travel directly from there to your destination.
Why so popular?
The Bahamas remains a popular destination for its well-designed resorts, beautiful beaches and vibrant culture that is well worth a visit. The harbor itself includes a 3,000-seat amphitheater and the Bahamas Museum of Junkanoo. Visitors can easily get transportation to other parts of the island or dine ashore in the harbor itself.
Given continued growth, the plan is to further expand the facilities, offering more family-oriented experiences. It is likely that Nassau will continue to grow in popularity and remain a stop on most Caribbean itineraries.
Nassau is expected to continue to grow over the years, with increasingly larger cruise ships offering passengers a taste of this beautiful island.
