The US Department of Foreign Affairs has updated its Mexico Travel Advisory, Increasing the travel risk level for six states (from previous four) to level 4, Which means that Americans are strongly encouraged to avoid these regions due to high crime percentages.

The affected states are Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas.

Each of these states is plagued by violent crime, including abductions, cartel activity and targeted attacks. While some tourist areas, such as Mazatlán’s Zona Dorada in Sinaloa and the center of Manzanillo in Colima, are considered relatively safer, journeys beyond these designated zones are very discouraged.

Local and federal authorities in Mexico recognize the security challenges, whereby officials emphasize efforts to combat organized crime and improve security measures.

However, recent reports indicate deteriorating circumstances in many of these regions, whereby some areas see more gang activities and struggles for law enforcement.

Despite the overall popularity of Mexico as a top destination for American travelers, those planning travel is advised to stay informed and to keep caution when traveling outside of large tourist hotspots.
