Now that we’re in the middle of autumn, more and more travelers are looking for sunny destinations to keep their sense of adventure alive.

For Europe, there is no better place to explore pristine beaches, fascinating culture and affordability across the board than the Portuguese Algarve, home to beautiful coastal destinations such as the city of Faro, the very popular Albufeira (although far too touristy if you ask me) and my personal favorite hidden gem, Quarteira.

To the east towards the Spanish border lies what is sometimes called the ‘Venice’ of Portugal.

Split by a quiet canal with plenty of boat tour operators, you might not see guides in striped shirts and funny hats, but if you squint hard enough you can tell yourself you’re in Venice.

We at Travel Off Path are absolutely on par with the experts ‘across the pond’ British sunwho hype lesser-known people Tavira as one of the best European getaways to swap autumn leaves for sun-drenched shores.

Enjoy Venice vibes in Tavira

Located along the Gilão River on Portugal’s vibrant Algarve coast, if you love beautiful waterfronts and golden beaches, you’ve come to the right place.

With a Venice-like canal dividing the whitewashed cityscape, this sunny retreat combines old-world charm with cozy riverside cafes and easy access to underrated beaches, far overlooked by the neighboring seaside resorts closer to Faro airport.

Tavira is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, trading honking horns for cathedral bells and the smell of home-cooked meals at one of Tavira’s many family-run tavernas.

When you venture through the city center, the canal is your North Star. Not only is it a great reference point for learning the ropes of navigating a relatively unknown city, it’s also the main attraction given its nickname ‘Venice’, which makes it somewhat confusing considering the most popular photo-op here is the Roman Bridge.

There are numerous cruises and boat trips to really enjoy the calm river, which leads to the UNESCO-protected Rio Formosa lagoon system.

Solar movements is an eco-friendly option, and happens to have a perfect Google rating even though they’ve been around for 7 years – talk about impressive in a world of whiners!

There are countless cafés along the waterfront where you can still enjoy Italian delicacies such as velvety cappuccino, but perhaps leave the spaghetti for the real Venice.

In local tavernas, as previously mentioned, you can enjoy Algarve staples such as a slew of fresh seafood, such as grilled sardines, octopus stew and shrimp cataplana.

Besides the sweltering heat all over the world, we all know the worst part of summer: crowds!

Who wants to interact with strangers when you’re just trying to relax and turn the page of your new favorite book?

The good news is that much of the Algarve’s crowds have subsided, even in the aforementioned Albufeira, which felt to me nothing short of a textbook ‘tourist trap’.

But that is not the case for Tavira, because it is so off-road. The beaches here are easy to get to and even more fun for lounging around, walking around town and stopping for a very, very cheap local beer and enjoying the view.

There’s a shortage of beaches to choose from, each with their own unique atmosphere, ranging from island escapes to letting it all hang out in the quintessential Euro way.

According to TripAdvisortravelers love these 3 beaches the most:

  • Praia do Barril
  • Praia de Cabaña
  • Isla de Tavira

For the record: Praia do Homem Nu is a clothing-optional beach, so you won’t be surprised by what you see.

Food, hotels and attractions: so affordable across the board

The UK Sun claims that decent hotels start at $99, but maybe they should hire me because I did some digging and found some better deals for you!

Princesa do Gilão is a beautiful boutique hotel with unparalleled canal views for just $66 in November.

Whatever you consume, whether it’s a glass of local wine, a fresh “catch of the day” or late-night tapas, unless it’s exclusively high-end gourmet, it won’t break the wallet – and that’s why digital nomads love this city!

But nothing beats free, right?

Tavira’s most popular attraction is The castle of Taviraand admission is free. This stunning monument sits high above Tavira’s old quarter and offers some of the best views in the Algarve.
