In a world that often feels unpredictable, knowing you’re going to a safe place can make a big difference when planning a trip. Here at Travel Off Path we believe that peace of mind is the ultimate travel luxury. While no destination is completely risk-free, understanding which countries consistently rank highest in safety can help you choose your next adventure with confidence.
For almost a decade, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) has asked travelers a crucial question: what makes a country feel safe? Their annual report, which combines real traveler experiences with hard data such as the Global Peace Index, has become an indispensable resource. The results for 2026 are inand while many familiar names top the list, there are some surprising shifts.
To help you navigate these top-level safe havens, we have a brand new interactive quiz designed to match your personal travel style with the safest destination that suits you perfectly.

What makes a country the ‘safest’?
BHTP’s methodology is unique in that it does not rely solely on statistics; it weighs heavily on the perceptions of American travelers who have actually visited these countries in the past five years. This is then balanced with data on peace, crime rates and city-specific safety scores.
The countries that consistently rise to the top often share characteristics such as political stability, low crime rates, effective healthcare and strong infrastructure. This year the list looks like this The Netherlands jump to the number one spot, praised for its tranquility and high marks for safety among various traveler groups. Old favorites such as Australia, CanadaAnd New Zealand remain firmly in the top layer and are known for their stability and stunning natural landscapes.
Icelandthe perennial number 1 for rest, remains tall, while Austria makes a strong debut in the top 3.

The 6 safest countries for travelers in 2026
Although the full BHTP list includes 15 countries, these top 6 currently represent the pinnacle of perceived and statistical safety for travelers:
- The Netherlands: Take the crown this year! It is highly rated for its overall tranquility, city safety (especially The Hague and Eindhoven), and specifically for women, LGBTQIA+, and travelers of color. Perfect for charming city breaks and explorations by bike – beware of the cycle paths!
- Australia: A consistent performer who scores highest in health measures and safety against terrorism. The stable political system and strict laws contribute to its safe reputation and offer a mix of vibrant cities and extensive coastlines.
- Austria: New to the top research rankings, but a powerhouse in peace. Ranked number 4 worldwide for tranquility, it offers sophisticated cities such as Vienna against a backdrop of beautiful mountain scenery.
- Iceland: Still of the world most peaceful country according to the Global Peace Index, even though traveler perception has declined somewhat this year. The otherworldly volcanic landscapes offer a unique, remote escape, albeit recent volcanic activity is something travelers should keep an eye on.
- Canada: Canada is the North American country for tranquility, ranking highly for its low crime rate, multicultural cities and vast, majestic wilderness, perfect for epic road trips.
- New Zealand: Another world leader in peace (#3 on the GPI), New Zealand is beloved for its incredibly safe cities and dramatic landscapes, ideal for adventurers and remote escapees.

Safe doesn’t mean the same thing: find your fit
Knowing that these countries are safe is reassuring, but it doesn’t tell you which country is the best fit your travel style. The cycling culture and charming canals of the Netherlands offer a very different journey than the remote volcanic wilderness of Iceland. Austria’s sophisticated urban culture stands in stark contrast to Australia’s vast coastlines and unique wildlife.
That’s where our quiz comes in. We designed it to help you match your preferences to the right safe destination. In just 30 seconds you tell us:
- What kind landscape defines your ideal safe escape? (Canals, coasts, volcanoes or mountains?)
- What specific aspect of safety is most important for you? (Health, tranquility, safety of various travelers or stability?)

Based on your answers, we will give you personal advice from the top 6 safest countries. Remember, even in the safest places, it’s wise to take precautions, such as getting travel insurance and staying aware of your surroundings – basic safety tips apply everywhere.
