The British government has done that announced that, start February 25, 2026visitors out 85 visa-free countries – including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and EU countries such as France — will no longer be able to enter the UK without one Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in advance.

The decision marks a important milestone in the UK’s transition to a fully digital borderwhich officials say will lay the foundation for seamless, contactless access in years to come.

According to the Home Office, the enforcement phase means all non-visa nationals must obtain ‘digital consent to travel’ before boarding. Airlines, ferry companies and other carriers must verify ETA status before departuremirror systems that are already present in the United States (ESTA) And Canada (eTA).

Since ETA went live in October 2023, more than 13.3 million travelers have successfully applied. Authorities say the system has already reduced processing times and created a smoother arrival experience at UK airports, even for transit passengers going through passport control.

Minister of Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp emphasized that the rollout of ETA strengthens both national security and convenience for travelers:

During the initial launch phase, applications were encouraged but not strictly enforced. This “grace period” approach follows the precedent set by other countries implementing similar pre-travel screening systems. Next year though consent will be required.

Apply for an ETA remains a simple process via the official British ETA mobile app or website, with a £16 fee and most approvals have been issued within minutes. The authorities still recommend that you at least submit an application three working days in advancein case additional checks are required for a small percentage of applicants.

British and Irish nationals – including those with dual nationality – remain exemptbut the UK government is urging dual citizens to ensure they have a valid British passport before travel. Those trying to enter with their non-British passports from February 2026 are at risk of becoming so access denied by carriers who must comply with the new enforcement rules.

The ETA scheme represents one of the most significant changes to UK border policy in more than a decade, transforming the way millions of travelers plan their trips to Britain from next year.
