If you’re already dreading slippery driveways, waiting for hours on the highway as you drive into town in the middle of a snowstorm, and the whole winter grind, then maybe all you need is a change of scenery to brave the colder months.

Some will head to Cancun in January, but if all-inclusive resorts and crowded beaches don’t exactly tickle your fancy, maybe a cozy getaway across the pond will.

Winter can be depressing in the suburbs, sure, but add in a small lamp-lit cobblestone street, some gabled roofs covered in virgin snow, and the echoing bells of medieval cathedrals, and you’ll be in the mood of a winter wonderland in no time.

Europe is the best choice to soak up the fairytale atmosphere this season, but if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a ski holiday in Switzerland, or blow your budget on a weekend in London, here are the 5 of the cheapest and most beautiful European destinations to choose from (plus one revealer to find your perfect match at the end of the article!):

Gdansk, Poland

Gdańsk, a port city in northeastern Poland, is nothing short of a post-World War II miracle. Once ravaged by the most destructive global conflict in modern history, it rose from the ashes and reinvented itself as a vibrant center along the Motława River, complete with a picture-perfect Old Town.

Along Gdańsk’s main pedestrian street, Ulica Dlugastroll past colorful mansions decorated with elaborate motifs and decorative cornice facades, while the waterfront is home to Europe’s best preserved medieval craneand an abundance of ‘milk bars’ serving Polish dishes at affordable prices.

For the most epic views in all of Gdańsk, climb the red-brick St. Mary’s Church. For history buffs, Westerplatte, on the outskirts of the city, is a peninsula where World War II officially began. Take in the sights of ruined barracks, walk the war-torn terrain, and visit the hilltop monument.

Riga, Latvia

Both the capital of Latvia and the European capital of Art Nouveau architecture, Riga has enough beautifully decorated facades and stately buildings to fill your entire phone storage – trust us, I’ve been there, done that.

At its core is the old town from the Middle Ages looks like something out of a Disney movie, with its colorful mansions, traditional taverns and cobbled alleys. If you happen to visit this December, you can even witness one of the oldest Christmas celebrations in the world.

Tradition has it that the first ever Christmas tree was placed just outside the House of the Blackheads, a historic merchant guild, all the way back in 1510. We’re not sure if this is just our impression, but every year the tree looks bigger and more magical.

Thessaloniki, Greece

For milder weather and the kind of Old World charm you can only find in an ancient city in Greece, try Thessaloniki, the country’s second largest metropolis, situated on the azure Mediterranean Sea, with thousands of years of history to its name.

Even though it can get quite chilly, Thessaloniki has minimal rain all winter – 4 or 5 days a month – and if you dress warmly enough you might still be able to enjoy yourself a little souvlaki with homemade wine in a taverna on the water.

Must-sees include the White Tower, a symbol of Greece and an imposing 15th-century prison, the Rotunda, a circular Roman-era building known for its well-preserved mosaics, and Ano Poli, a historic hilltop district with a relaxed atmosphere and panoramic views of the urban sprawl below.

Pontevedra, Spain

A small town in Spain’s much-overlooked northwest, Pontevedra is located right on the Way of St. James, a Catholic pilgrimage route leading to Santiago de Compostela, and while many will consider it a stopover, it’s not somewhere you want to run past.

If you stay here for more than one night, you’ll encounter a perfectly preserved historic center, dotted with arcaded squares, Gothic buildings and family-owned bars serving lunchtime tapas for a fraction of Barcelona prices.

It’s been attracting a growing number of foreign guests lately, and given how peaceful, downright beautiful and budget-friendly it is, especially considering this is the touristy Spain we’re talking about, we can’t say we’re surprised.

We’ll round it off with another underrated capital. This time the ever-trendy, still-to-be-destroyed by overtourism steals a deal Sofia, in Bulgaria: the cultural heart of the eastern Balkan country and one of the most important cultural centers of the Orthodox world.

Sofia has been under the control of many civilizations over the years, and this makes for a truly unique cityscape: from Roman churches and mosaics to Ottoman-era mosques to the imposing, Byzantine-inspired Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, it’s like an open book on past empires.

It won’t be too off the beaten path anytime soon either: from 2026, Bulgaria-based GullivAir will launch two nonstop flights from the US to Sofia, with New York’s JFK and Chicago’s O’Hare expected to do the honors. More information can be found here.
