People often have the wrong impression about Alabama. Of course, some Alabamians aren’t doing their state any favors with cut tees and lifted trucks.
But if you skipped the Alabama coast in favor of Florida, you’ve missed some truly beautiful vacation destinations, whether it’s Gulf Shores and its new airport, neighboring Orange Beach, or a short drive north to the charming waterfront villages of Mobile Bay.

One such place caught our attention here at Travel Off Path for its timeless appearance, blissful bay, soulful cuisine and nostalgic stays in classic inns and bed & breakfasts.
The city invites visitors with mild winters, perfect for discovering the delights of small towns, enjoying a sunset cruise or even hitting the links. Honest hope is the most underestimated winter residence in the South.
A characteristic city center

Fairhope is a proud city. That doesn’t mean the locals aren’t hospitable. They simply keep their beloved hometown well preserved and independently owned, instead of letting chain stores and restaurants ruin the atmosphere.
Downtown Fairhope is the most walkable area, with the exception of walks along the bay, including the scenic pier.
You’ll find legendary storefronts, old-fashioned inns, artsy alleys, homey cafes that are cheaper than Starbucks, and great dining options you’d expect to find in the South.

Experts at Midwest living crossed streams here and emphasized their favorite activity, such as renting a bicycle The Fairhope Store to explore the tree-lined streets of downtown and hit the glittering waterfront if time permits.
The most indispensable place, however, is Fairhope’s own storybook ‘French Quarter‘ – although it is a small courtyard enclave compared to New Orleans.
We recommend that you check out From Tamara for an epic breakfast with southern staples and a customizable breakfast Bloody Mary bar from just $5 – what a bargain!
Beat the heat! Enjoy the winter Wonders on the water

The Fairhope Pier is practically the city’s North Star. This beloved landmark serves as a famous fishing spot and a place where you can easily enjoy the breathtaking views of Mobile Bay, where you can occasionally spot dolphins bobbing in the distance.
That’s why you can’t visit Fairhope without hopping aboard a boat in some form, be it fishing excursions or scenic drives, without the bright summer sun.
While we won’t sugarcoat Mobile Bay’s water quality (it’s no Gulf Shores), that’s where relaxing sunset cruises come into play.

Eastern Shore Charter is the best choice on their 90-minute journey across the bay – they’ll even pick you up from the elegant Large hotelthe most sought-after accommodation in the city.
If you really want to take your game to the next level, you can explore numerous Gulf cities in the new way American Symphony river cruise, stop in nearby Mobile.
But if you really want to feel like a local, make time to enjoy masterfully prepared seafood dishes ranging from the famous French Bouillabaisse to freshly caught Gulf Snapper at Sunset Pointe at Fly Creek Marina.
Better yet, they toast together as the sun sets over the water, making for a unique golden hour tradition.

There’s no better place to cozy up in historic inns
The Grand Hotel is undoubtedly the most popular accommodation in town, but there are a range of restored bed and breakfasts and inns that seem even more in keeping with this timeless city than a luxury hotel on the marina.
We’ve covered Fairhope in the past and still stand by our top pick, and Midwest Living has one in mind as well:

Just know that both come at a hefty price, over $250 per night. Despite being a quiet town, Fairhope has become a trendy getaway, and prices often reflect that for accommodations, even in winter.
2 ways to fly in
There are several reasons why Fairhope has become more popular, and it’s not just because rumors have leaked out about famous faces like Morgan Freeman vacationing here or where Philip Rivers coaches high school football after a very unexpected comeback to the NFL.
Fairhope is now easier to get to than ever. It used to be that the best way to get here was to fly into Mobile, which is still possible, but more and more people are choosing to fly into Gulf Shores now that Allegiant Air is offering flights here.
Mobile (MOB) is about 50 minutes away, while Gulf Shores (GUF) is just half an hour.
