3) Bandung, Indonesia: where colonial meets millennial 🇮🇩

Bandung is an old city, founded in the early 19th century. Today you will still discover it Dutch influence with its colonial facades and old-fashioned street patterns, of course sprinkled with Asian delicacies.
Bali is the crown jewel of Indonesia, even after many travelers have expressed numerous disappointments in recent years.
As such, more and more travelers are choosing to explore Indonesia’s diverse archipelago of Bandung, inland in West Java.
This almost unheard of city until now has done that layers of heritage waiting to be discoveredand conversely, a hip, youthful city life shaped by universities, indie brands and live music.
That’s why Bandung isn’t just a walking history lesson with museums and old-fashioned streets, it’s a trendy “student town,” as we say in the United States.

You will also find amazing nature there. The cityscape is backdropped by the Parahyangan Highlands and surrounding volcanic terrain, inviting adventurers to explore beyond the urban sprawl.
Bandung won’t break the bank either. Even a last-minute trip can give you one 4 star hotel for $30 in February, but it is still the rainy season…
The best times to visit without getting soaked June to September.
2) Okinawa: the ‘Hawaii of Japan’ 🇯🇵
We get it: Tokyo is great. But Japan’s lesser-known beaches are truly unspoilt.

You may have heard of Okinawa because of its history of World War II and the fact that many American military personnel are based here, so chances are you won’t stand out if you venture to this phenomenal island.
But seeing familiar faces and camouflage gear are not what gave Okinawa its name The Japanese ‘Hawaii’.
It got that name because of its subtropical climate, turquoise waters, laid-back lifestyle and the simple fact that it is an off-the-path island, similar to what Hawaii is to the US mainland.
But don’t expect to find a luau…
Instead, you’ll discover a distinct Ryukyu culture, local island cuisine and… traditions found nowhere else in Japan, which is hard to believe since Tokyo seems to have everything under the sun.

One such tradition is Eisa dancing, led by drum-led performances Obon to honor their ancestors.
That said, we all know Japan is a place to party, but you’ll never guess the spot that famous traveler and chef Anthony Bourdain just had to have during his visit to Okinawa: an egg salad sandwich from a Lawson supermarket.
I’ll take sushi…
The bottom line is that more and more travelers are realizing that if you can get to Tokyo, you can get to Okinawa, just a 2.5 to 3 hour flight away.
And who wouldn’t want to have a layover in Tokyo?
