We can all agree that the ever-increasing travel trend is the rise of the digital nomad: those looking for the freedom to work on the go while meeting their travel needs. What was once considered an ‘unusual path’ is now the norm for many people.

In recent years, more and more employees have taken action. Now, more than 40 countries offer some form of a digital nomad visa, making this a viable option for many hopeful travelers.

CV.io parsed thousands of Instagram posts with the hashtag #digitalnomad in an attempt to discover where most digital nomads stay around the world, and they found that Three cities in South America surpassed all others.

After searching through thousands of posts across continents, they discovered that London had the most vibrant nomadic community in Europe, New York in the US, and Bangkok was the second busiest destination for nomads in the world.

This report clearly shows that digital nomads are taking up space all over the world. Due to the sunny weather, low cost of living and affordable flights from the US, nomads wanting to live in South America are increasing in numbers.

According to Resume.io, Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro and Medellin saw the highest populations of nomads based on social media posts.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires

The Argentine capital Buenos Aires is number 1 and has 8.3% more digital nomads than Rio. The vibrant city didn’t make it to the top spot in the 2022 Resume.io report, which shows that the city is growing in popularity: so now’s the time to go!

It is a cultural haven in South America with reasonable prices. It’s no surprise that digital nomads are attracted to this way of life.

Local start-ups and a friendly expat community make it easy for those relocating to get involved with local cultures and people.

The city heard, and they delivered! Buenos Aires has many co-working spaces in town for remote workers. A few of these spaces host events specifically for digital nomads, making it easy for newbies to grow their community.

It can often be quite intimidating to move to a new country, especially if there is a language barrier. Fortunately for the nomads, Buenos Aires does everything it can to make the move less stressful and chaotic.

Upon arrival, nomads can collect their visas and welcome packages. (This includes hotel discounts and a SIM card to get started: win!)

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

Sun, sea and a vibrant culture? What more can you ask for? Often considered one of the friendliest cities in South America, Rio makes taking a big step feel effortless.

Although Brazil has so many great places to explore, nomads are drawn to the coastal city thanks to its affordable prices and local culture.

Carnival, festivals and street performances: there is always something happening in the city center.

Being a nomad-friendly city, there is a large community of fellow remote workers, travelers and expats in the area.

Brazil was actually one of the first South American countries to offer a visa program for digital nomads.

The income requirements for the visa are that you must earn at least $1,500 per month – which is quite low compared to most (or you must demonstrate that you have saved at least $18,000).

Colombia has certainly grown in terms of safety and tourism over the years.

Resume.io shows that 3 cities in this South American country are in the top 10 for 2023: Bogota (#9), Santa Marta (#7) and Medellin (#3).

The government hopes to attract more than 45,000 nomads to the country next summer, after they receive their new one visa for digital nomads earlier this year.

While not all nomads crave vibrant city life, Medellin’s suburbs are also filled with quaint neighborhoods with vibrant traveler populations.

I visited Colombia last summer and stayed in the popular (and safe) neighborhood of El Poblado. A chic community just 20 minutes from the city of Medellin, it is the perfect place for digital nomads.

With its tree-lined streets, hostels and array of restaurants/bars, this neighborhood is teeming with nomads and solo travelers. There are also many cafes and work spaces nearby.
