Digital nomads are constantly on the move and most are always looking for the best place to set up shop.
Some prefer beaches, others cities, but there are always certain criteria that remote workers must meet in order to create a workplace for them.
Latin America is full of great places for digital nomads, and the underrated cities of Panama City, Santo Domingo, Granada, Antigua and San Salvador are all great choices for different reasons.
They all offer great amenities and Wi-Fi, a growing digital nomad community, a cheap cost of living, accommodation for every budget, easy transportation to other destinations, and a relatively safe daily life.
While many skip these underrated Latin American cities for the region’s beautiful beaches, there are countless reasons why digital nomads should add these to their radar.
Here’s why these 5 lesser-known Latin American cities are ideal for digital nomads:
Panama City, Panama
The really cool capital of Panama is great for digital nomads for many reasons. Not only is it super connected to all other major cities in Latin America and the US, but the big city amenities and modern facilities will also win you over.
The charming historic neighborhood of Casco Viejo is a great place to spend your days wandering the alleys, not to mention visiting all the pools, cafes, and rooftop bars while you get your work done. Of course, you can visit the Panama Canal and impress your friends when they come to visit you here with a trip to this wonder.
Panama City is multicultural and vibrant. English is widely spoken and they use the US dollar as their currency, meaning you don’t have to convert in your head all the time.

San Salvador, El Salvador
This vast and chaotic capital isn’t for everyone, and there are many areas to avoid, but the city does have its charms and could make a great digital nomad base for a while.
You can get a chic apartment in a modern and very secure building with a rooftop pool for a shockingly low price, and other amenities like groceries and Wi-Fi are pretty cheap too.
The views of the surrounding countryside are quite amazing, and there are many expat-friendly bars, cafes and restaurants everywhere. Getting around with rideshare apps is easy here, and the sheer size of this city means there’s always something new to discover.
Another reason to come to San Salvador is the people. El Salvadorians are among the warmest you will meet, and they welcome people’s interest in their country. Day trips to nearby villages and locations such as Suchitoto or Lake Coatepeque are always an option if you also have some free time.
Grenada, Nicaragua
Nicaragua is one of the most underrated countries in Latin America. Ask anyone who has been there and they will probably tell you that it is the charming and colorful city of Granada that stands out most in their minds as a digital nomad base. .
Although not the capital (that’s Managua), Granada sits on the shores of the imposing Lake Nicaragua and offers plenty of day trips to the island of Ometepe, or to volcanoes and lakes that carve out like the polar Laguna Apoyo.
The city itself is beautiful and colonial, and the apartments are cheap and the amenities very affordable. Although this city is generally very safe, there are of course things to look out for and places to avoid. Just ask a seasoned expat or helpful local, and they won’t steer you in the wrong direction.

Antigua, Guatemala
Guatemala is full of great places to visit, and most of them are also good places for digital nomads to settle. Many people love the beautiful Lake Atitlan, and some prefer the beautiful areas in Guatemala City, but my choice is the absolutely charming city of Antigua.
Antigua is a well-preserved colonial city and its cobbled streets are lined with every kind of restaurant, guest house, shop and café you can imagine. There are tons of American eateries here, if that’s what you’re looking for (including the nicest Wendy’s and Starbucks you’ll ever see).
The city lies in the shadow of the imposing Acatenango volcano, and the surrounding landscape is a sight to behold.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Many come to the popular Dominican Republic and head straight for the beaches, and for good reason. This country is known for its sandy beaches and while these coastal towns can offer great options for digital nomads, it’s the vibrant capital Santo Domingo that makes this list.
Although this city can be a bit overwhelming and there are many areas you’ll want to avoid, the colorful and culture-rich historic district is a must-see. There is plenty to enjoy here and it would make sense to settle here as a digital nomad.
With restaurants and cafes lining all the streets and modern supermarkets and accommodation around every corner, the city could be a great place to call home and offer plenty of day trips to nature and beaches to keep you busy.
