Looking for the perfect winter getaway in Europe? This is why this popular region of Spain is the ultimate winter destination.
Andalusia is a region in southern Spain that is currently breaking all tourist records. This sunny European hotspot is on track to end the year more than 33 million tourists, a new highlight.
And while Andalusia is a popular destination to visit all year round, winter is actually the best time of year to plan a trip there.
This is why Andalusia is currently the best winter destination in all of Europe:
1. Sunny and warm
One of the main reasons why travelers head to Andalusia during the autumn and winter months? It is one of the warmest regions in all of Europe!
While this means temperatures can be unbearably hot in summer (think 110° F), the weather in Andalusia is much milder in winter. This part of Spain has the warmest winters in Europe due to its location just above North Africa.
In many popular destinations in Andalusia you can enjoy the sun and warm weather all year round.
Even in December and January, the coldest months, the average daytime high temperature is usually around 60 degrees. It’s the perfect weather to explore all that Andalucia has to offer, which brings me to my next point…
2. Charming towns and villages
From big cities to small towns, Andalusia has something for everyone.
The largest city and capital of the region is Seville, an enchanting city famous for traditions such as flamenco dancing and bullfighting. Seville is perfect to visit in winter because of the pleasant weather, fewer crowds and low prices out of season.
The coastal city of Málaga is another place not to be missed in Andalusia. This sunny city has broken tourism records all year round, but the winter off-season is one of the best times to travel when visitors are few.
Smaller cities such as Granada and Córdoba are also worth a visit for their architectural beauty and unique Moorish influences.
3. Winter festivities
While Spain may not be the first place you think of for Christmas travel in Europe, it is actually a surprisingly festive destination, especially Andalusia. This makes it a great destination to visit this year for a winter trip to Europe.
Cities like Seville and Málaga go all out with decorations, including beautiful displays of Christmas lights. You will also find typical European Christmas markets in many larger cities.
And throughout Andalusia the emphasis is on the religious elements of Christmas, with nativity scenes and processions leading up to the holiday.
The Christmas season in Andalusia is a unique experience, and unlike other parts of Europe you won’t have to deal with freezing weather or snow as you browse the markets and enjoy delicious holiday treats.
4. It’s surprisingly affordable
One reason I like traveling in Andalusia is because the value for money is generally very good. Spain is actually one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe (after Portugal), and it’s much cheaper than countries like Britain, France or Italy.
And southern Spain is even cheaper than the rest of the country, especially the major cities of Madrid and Barcelona, where you’ll typically find higher prices.
Traveling in Andalusia is not worth a lot of money: the average travel cost per person is estimated at $135 per day. BudgetYourReis. This is a lot cheaper than almost anywhere in Western Europe, making Andalusia a budget-friendly destination.
Since winter is the off-season, it’s an even cheaper time to visit, and you can probably find good deals on hotels and activities.
