Mexicana de AviacionMexico’s renowned airline, experienced a delayed return to the skies on Tuesday, with the first flight to Tulum International Airport arriving five hours later than planned due to dense fog. The plane departed Mexico City on time and was diverted to Merida, where it remained on the ground for more than five hours until conditions improved in Tulum, finally landing at 1:28 p.m.
This flight marks the airline’s long-awaited comeback after a 13-year hiatus. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador emphasized that Mexicana de Aviación will now serve 20 destinations, including some not currently served by other commercial airlines.
The airline resumed operations on Tuesday, initially covering fourteen domestic routes, with plans to expand to four more, as announced by President López Obrador. This expansion is part of the airline’s strategy to connect key destinations across Mexico.
Under the direction of the Ministry of Defense (Sedena), Mexicana de Aviación is part of the airport, railway and emergency services group Olmeca-Maya-Mexica. This group oversees several major transportation hubs, including the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in the state of Mexico, and airports in Tulum, Chetumal, Campeche, Puebla and Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas.
Mexicana de Aviación’s first passenger flight took off at Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum, marking an important moment for the airline. Tulum Airport will become the secondary hub for Mexicana’s operations and provide a new focal point for the growing flight network.
