Mexico is currently the most popular destination for American travelers. Hotspots like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta are attracting record numbers of visitors.

But if you’re always looking for the next big thing and don’t want to go to the same places as everyone else, why not? consider a visit to Costalegre instead of?

Here’s why this coastal region of Mexico will become the next tourist hotspot:

Exceptional natural beauty

Costalegre means ‘the happy coast’ and it is a fascinating coastal region and an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Far from the busy beaches of Cancun, you will find relaxing and secluded beaches here. The region has a coastline of 380 kilometers long.

Costalegre also features lush jungles, rugged cliffs and green countryside. The Yelapa Falls are located in the region and the opportunity to hike to the top or swim in the pools is a particular highlight.

The Costalegre region is an incredible base for outdoor adventurers who want to enjoy activities such as hiking, cycling and horse riding. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy diving, snorkeling and SUP or canoeing along the coast.

Easy access by plane

If you choose to visit Costalegre now, the best way to reach the region is to fly into Puerto Vallarta’s Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport or Manzanillo-Costalegre Airport and then take a bus or taxi to your resort to bring.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport

But by mid-2024, visitors to this emerging hotspot will have direct access to the best resorts by flying into the Chalacetepec International Airport, which is currently under development.

This airport will be an international hub, making access to the Costalegre region easier than ever and boosting tourism here.

Chalacetepec Airport is located halfway between Careyes and Punta Perula. It is less than 32 km away from the towns of Tomatlan and Chamela and only 65 km north of La Manzanilla. This airport should completely revolutionize travel to the region and it is when this airport opens that we expect the number of visitors to the region to really explode.

Beautiful beaches seen from the road in Mexico

Once you arrive in Costalegre it is also easy to get around. Highway 200, also known as Carretera Pacífico, is a well-maintained highway that will take you to the region’s best sights. Why not rent a car, hit the road and explore?

New luxury developments

The Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo opened in Costalegre at the end of 2022.

Six Senses Xala will also open in the region in 2026, bringing more rooms and options to a region already home to a robust collection of luxury resorts.

The Las Alamandas is considered the best Costalegre resort according to Tripadvisor, followed by the Cabo Blanco Hotel and Marina and the Cuixmala resort.

The four municipalities in the region are Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, La Huerta and Cihuatlán. Each offers something unique, yet attractive to their visitors.

Further development is also coming to Costalegre. In December 2023, it was announced that Xala would break ground on a $1 billion project spanning 3,000 hectares. This will become one of Mexico’s premier destinations and will be located along Costalegre’s rugged Pacific coastline. The scope of the project includes two luxury boutique hotels and 100 estate-style holiday homes.

Environmental focus

If you consider the environmental impact of your trip, Costalegre is a sustainable and eco-friendly destination to choose now.

Costalegre’s main priority is the conservation of the land. This means that the local community continues to prioritize providing an environmentally conscious, low-impact visitor experience when planning and promoting their tourism offering.

Costalegre is known for its traditional Mexican towns with a robust ecotourism offering, stunningly beautiful architecture and also a reputation for the quality of their traditional cuisine. This eco-philosophy will remain at the forefront of any further development in the region.
