As exciting as choosing the next place to explore can be, indecisive travelers (myself included) can often find the sheer number of options paralyzing.
Are you going somewhere warm and beachy? Would you rather opt for a picturesque European city trip? Or will you finally splurge on that remote vacation you’ve been dreaming about for years?
Although we cannot answer these questions for you, we can certainly help guide the decision-making process.
Condé Nast traveler has just released its ranking of the top 10 countries in the world to visit, based on the reviews of more than half a million travelers, many of whom are looking for the same incredible experiences as you.
So if you’re still unsure where to go, reading the list below can give you some much-needed guidance.
1. Japan
After taking the title of trendiest international destination for American travelers this spring, Japan is back at the top of a prestigious list – but this time its influence is even greater.
People can’t get enough of the vibrant energy of Tokyo, the fascinating sights of Kyoto, the world-class food scene in Osaka and the cherry blossom-lined streets that look like they just jumped out of a painting.
While the many natural sights found throughout the country are nothing short of breathtaking, Japan has managed to build a cult-like following among travelers, largely due to its culture and traditions.
That’s why those lucky enough to explore the region won’t want to miss timeless attractions such as Fushimi Inari Taisha, Sensō-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, and the breathtaking Osaka Castle.
2. Italy
Although Italy is number two on today’s list, it has always (secretly) been my favorite place to visit.
After all, it’s hard not to fall in love with the intricately decorated buildings, movie-like beaches, sunny countryside, delectable food and lovely locals that make Italy the stunning, diverse hub it is today.
The only downside to visiting a place as fascinating as Italy is having to choose between an endless array of cities and regions, all of which have a unique charm.
You can explore the iconic sights of Rome, stroll the art-filled streets of Florence, wander the romantic canals of Venice, take in the grandeur of Milan and swim in the crystal blue waters of Capri – the choices are endless.
3. Greece
The third place holder on today’s list has had a whirlwind of a year with it, and many of its coveted attractions, breaking all tourism records time and time again.
And with Santorini, Mykonos, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Crete and Rhodes calling everyone’s names this summer, the already impressive figures will undoubtedly be surpassed once again.
4. Ireland
Fourth spot on the list, running from the sunny coast of Greece, is taken by Ireland, a country beloved for its enchanting landscapes, warm hospitality and rugged terrain (adventure lovers, this is your haven).
Here you can stroll the culture-rich streets of Dublin, explore the Wild Atlantic Way or enjoy a pint of Guinness in a cozy pub on what will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful trips of your life.
5. New Zealand
One of the only two countries in the top 5 not in Europe, New Zealand epitomizes the beauty and deeply authentic charm of Oceania.
Are you looking for dreamy beaches? Majestic mountains to climb? Vibrant green forests?
You don’t have to choose here; you get everything I just mentioned and more.
So this is your cue to finally see the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, marvel at the views of the Abel Tasman National Park and take advantage of Queenstown’s endless adventure opportunities.
Rounding out the top 10
I could go on for ages describing what makes the beautiful hubs on Condé Nast’s list so worth visiting, but for the sake of time, let’s quickly run through the remaining places that made the top 10.
6. Spain
7. Portugal
8. Norway
9. Switzerland
10. Turkey
As you can see, Europe has once again taken over the ‘best places to visit in the world’ list, with seven of the entries (well, seven and a half if you count Turkey) coming from the Old Continent, so if you still doesn’t If you don’t know which place to explore in 2024, rest assured that you will focus on this region and you will have a good time.
