If you don’t come to visit California at least once in your life it’s as if you didn’t exist. It boasts incredible nature, beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere, making it one of the best holiday destinations in the US. However, for the same reason it is often busy and overcrowded. But who said you have to stick to the most popular tourist spots?

How about exploring the little-known wonders and experiencing what the cool side of California is all about? Moreover, your trip will be more budget-friendly. To help you prepare the itinerary, here is a list of the 8 Incredible Hidden Gems in California to Visit in 2024.

Sausalito

Sausalito is a charming town just across the Golden Gate Bridge. It has a rich history, a unique bohemian atmosphere and a vibrant arts scene that attracts painters and writers alike. The hip bistros, cafes and restaurants are another reason to visit.

Be sure to get a table on the waterfront so you can enjoy beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline. For a different perspective of the Bay Area, we recommend taking a ferry ride into the city, which will also include a glimpse of the famous Alcatraz Island.

Point Lobos

If you prefer spending time in nature over city escapes, head to Point Lobos. Located in Monterey County, this state park is often referred to as the “crown jewel of the California State Park System.” And for good reason. It features dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches and fascinating wildlife. All that often becomes the focus of photographers and will satisfy any nature lover.

There is also a lot to see underwater. It is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and is home to several species, including giant blue whales. So go diving or snorkeling, just bring your equipment, because there are no rental options.

Please note that camping is not available at Point Lobos State Park and dogs are not allowed. However, you can at least enjoy a nice picnic – there are tables and barbecue areas.

A thousand steps beach

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation, you simply must visit Thousand Steps Beach in South Laguna. High cliffs border it from all sides and you have to take a long flight of stairs to get there. But do not worry. It’s not really a thousand steps, but just over 200, which is certainly achievable.

You’ll be rewarded with a secluded atmosphere, pristine sand and clean water teeming with marine life. It also offers excellent conditions for surfing, bodysurfing and skimboarding. In the southern corner is the Thousand Steps Sea Cave, which you can enter and explore. Be careful of high tides and strong currents.

Salton Sea

About a three-hour drive from LA and San Diego lies one of the world’s largest inland seas: the famous Salton Sea. Because although it is not on the coastline, it has salt water and is home to various fish and bird species.

You can go boating, kayaking and fishing. If you are lucky you can catch tilapia or corvina. On the other hand, swimming there is not recommended as it is not considered safe. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to stop at Slab City, where you can be fascinated by many cool art installations.

Burney Falls

Nestled in the woods of Northern California, Burney Falls is an ideal place to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy outdoor activities. The most popular are fishing, boating, picnicking and hiking. One of the routes takes you to the highlight of the park: the 30-meter-high waterfall.

If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet in the forest, we recommend that you come on a weekday. The waterfalls also look most beautiful at sunrise. So why not come in the evening, camp and wake up to the glory of this beautiful nature?

Pinnacle National Park

Not far from Point Lobos lies another undiscovered natural wonder: Pinnacles National Park. The name comes from the towering rock formations that are the main attraction there, and you can explore them via more than 50 kilometers of scenic hiking trails.

Some are longer, others are shorter, making them suitable for all levels. In any case, take your camera with you, because you will probably encounter many birds and other wildlife along the way. Pinnacles National Park is also an excellent place for stargazing.

Monomer

This is another enchanting desert lake that has been kept secret for a while. Like the Salton Sea, it is salty and full of life, such as migratory birds, brine shrimp and alkali flies. And the limestone formations called tuff towers add to its charm.

If you would like to learn more about Mono Lake and its unique habitat, there is a visitor center. Alternatively, you can take a free tour organized by the Mono Lake Committee. They also offer canoe trips and field seminars.

Trinity Alps

California is known for its incredible nature. And who wouldn’t want a piece of it just for themselves? In Trinity Alps this can be done quite easily. This amazing mountain range extends over 500,000 hectares of land with approximately 900 kilometers of hiking trails. Yet it is often overlooked.

Amid mountain peaks, crystal clear mountain lakes, waterfalls and lush meadows you can enjoy the peace and quiet that you will hardly find elsewhere. It is also definitely worth staying a night there. There are plenty of them camping and glamping possibilities in the area.
