While the dynamics of body weight — including who carries more weight, where it’s distributed, and the reasons behind these differences — remain largely uncertain, set point theory suggests that our bodies tend to resist change, striving to maintain a comfortable weight.

“For instance, if you indulge during a vacation and gain a few pounds, upon returning to your usual routine, your appetite will likely adjust downward, helping you shed those extra pounds,” says Hunnes. “Conversely, if you restrict calories significantly for a period, your body may respond by increasing your appetite, leading you back to your previous weight.”

Evaluating the Validity of Set Point Theory

Set point theory isn’t a novel concept — it has been a subject of research for many years. The general consensus is that there is merit to this idea.

A comprehensive review published in the Journal of Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders indicates that body weight tends to remain within a stable range, despite fluctuations in energy intake and expenditure, suggesting that obesity results from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors.

Hunnes asserts: “It makes logical sense. Our skeletal structure, genetic makeup, and metabolic processes are all geared towards maintaining homeostasis or stability. Our bodies function optimally in stable conditions. Thus, I believe everyone has a set point.”

It’s More Flexible Than You Might Think

However, set point theory should not lead you to feel powerless or to believe you are genetically bound to remain at an undesirable weight.

“Research indicates that human set points are relatively ‘loose’ (i.e., encompassing upper and lower limits) rather than strictly regulated,” states a study review published in the journal F1000 Reports.

Set point theory aligns with proven weight-loss wisdom: gradual and consistent changes yield the best results. It’s essential to adopt a sustainable lifestyle that includes regular diet and exercise.

Avoid attempting rapid weight loss through extreme workouts, starvation, or fad diets — individuals who resort to such tactics often regain the weight, sometimes even surpassing their original weight; this can be partly attributed to their body’s set point.

Is it Possible to Alter Your Body’s Set Point?

Yes, it is possible, but any changes should be made gradually.

“I believe it is feasible to slightly modify your set point,” states Hunnes. “Engaging in crash diets will not alter your body’s set point and may ultimately lead to weight gain over time. In contrast, a slow and steady approach can help establish a new set point for your body.”

Hunnes reflects on her own experience. In high school, her body’s set point was consistently around 125 to 128 pounds. “Regardless of my efforts, my weight remained in that range,” she shares.

Years later, after earning a Ph.D. in public health and building a career as a dietitian, her body naturally gravitates toward 118 to 120 pounds, possibly due to adopting a plant-based diet as an adult or increased activity from parenthood.

“No matter my eating habits or exercise levels, I tend to stay within that range,” she notes. “Minor adjustments over time might slightly shift the set point. However, if you have a larger bone structure, it’s unrealistic to expect to become significantly smaller or thinner.”

Applying Set Point Theory to Weight Loss

“The most effective way to achieve weight loss is through small, incremental changes that may trick the body into believing it’s still in maintenance mode,” suggests Hunnes. “For example, if you reduce your daily caloric intake by 100 calories over several months — shifting from 2,100 to 2,000 calories daily while potentially increasing your energy expenditure — your body is unlikely to notice the difference, and you should progressively lose weight.”

By establishing a slight caloric deficit and incorporating regular physical activity, you can prevent weight gain and facilitate more weight loss. Experts recommend a gradual approach, targeting a loss of one to two pounds per week to maintain metabolic stability.

“Patience and consistency pay off,” concludes Hunnes. “A gradual approach helps preserve your body’s homeostatic balance.”
