Of course, there are dozens of beautiful beaches along the coast of this beautiful country, but most vacationers have their sights set on Montego Bay.
While there are plenty of luxury beach resorts, if Montego Bay is your only perception of Jamaica, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
Jamaica is one of the friendliest Caribbean getaways where locals are happy to share their secret escapes if you ask.
There’s one pristine beach town that rivals Montego Bay for amenities, but even the iconic holiday destination can’t compete with the pristine beauty and authentic experiences of Port Antonio.
Beautiful resorts with more room to move around
If Montego Bay is known for anything, it is its luxurious resorts set in beautiful scenery.
With summer just around the corner, this iconic beach city is not only home to the Caribbean Sea, but also to an endless supply of ‘Jamaican Me Crazy Mahn’ t-shirts.
Exhibit A of why you should consider exploring other parts of the country.
Port Antonio is a pure paradise, but it is being developed to cater to a small group of tourists who know of its existence, and would like to keep it that way.
Stays range from affordable hostels, which cost $30 per night, to luxurious beachside resorts such as the Trident Hotel.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to spend more than $500 per night for a beach stay; there are also mid-range resorts such as Frenchman’s Cove Resort under $200.
The only thing missing are all-inclusive amenities, but that only speaks to the allure of Port Antonio’s authenticity and untapped potential. Real Jamaica.
A beautiful nature destination
That’s not to say Montego Bay isn’t beautiful, but Port Antonio has a raw appeal with pristine natural areas such as the Blue Lagoon.
Tucked away in a private paradise, this natural wonder offers cozy white-sand beaches and perfect, swimmable blue waters fed by ocean runoff and underwater springs.
Although it is the most touristy spot in the region, it is nowhere near what you find in mega-popular resorts.
At most you can wave at fellow tourists who have hired a guide for a nice boat trip, but you won’t be cramped for space.
Port Antonio is set against a backdrop of lush rainforests. Tourists can safely explore the jungle by hiring a guide to discover the beautiful waterfalls of this area, which are also suitable for swimming.
No better place for Jamaican food
When you go to Starbucks, you’re usually happy with the expensive, sugar-filled concoction they serve.
But if you want Real coffee, Jamaica is the place to be. Often overshadowed as a coffee destination, tourists may be surprised by how good it tastes and how enjoyable an experience you can have here.
South of Port Antonio lie the majestic Blue Mountains, rightly named for the bluish hue that hovers over their peak.
Here you are probably in the Caribbean’s best destination to enjoy your morning drink.
Tourists can visit several coffee farms in beautiful towns among the mountains and enjoy the taste of your new favorite cup of coffee.
Better yet, you can’t visit Jamaica without eating jerk chicken at least once.
Although Montego Bay serves Jamaica’s most famous dish on a silver platter, your best bet is to find a street stall.
Port Antonio is the OG of roasted chicken, let your nose follow the smoke and you’ll thank me later.
Only 2 hours drive
There is no airport for Port Antonio, but it is a cruise port. However, those arriving by plane can easily reach Port Antonio in about 2 hours.
The most popular way to do this is via Kingston.
Yes, this city doesn’t have the best reputation, but there are legitimate, safe transportation options from here.
The next best option would be the resort town of Ocho Rios.
With a new direct flight from the US, travelers can also reach Port Antonio from here in just over 2 hours.
Montego Bay would be the longest trip at just under 4 hours.
